The term “glamping” has taken on a whole new meaning lately as campers look to elevate their outdoor experience with a little bit of glamour thrown into the mix.

If you are not familiar with the glamorous camping concept, Huttopia Southern Maine is the best place to get acquainted.

Sure, you can still enjoy s’mores roasted over an open fire, swim in a freshwater pond or hike along the trails here, but the best part comes when you retire at night. The French woodland retreat has a variety of accommodations to choose from, including wood and canvas tents or Vista tiny homes.

Located just a few miles from Kennebunkport, Huttopia’s family-friendly glampground is designed for everyone from couples to families up to six people. They also have pet friendly accommodations so you can bring along your four-legged friend for some fun.

For our visit, we stayed in a pet friendly Vista tiny home that was outfitted with two bedrooms and one full bathroom. The cozy cabin is designed for up to five guests and also has electricity, and a kitchen with full-size refrigerator, microwave and two-burner cooktop.

One of the best features we loved about this home was the screened-in front porch where we enjoyed morning coffee and a late night cocktail while listening to the peaceful quietude that surrounded us. The Vista home does not have air conditioning, but all of the sliding doors do open up (and the screens keep the bugs at bay) providing the perfect amount of cooling at night.

There is a Camp Store on property that offers snacks, local microbrews, French wines, and souvenirs to bring home and remember your experience. We did not choose to cook in our cabin during our stay, but instead decided to check out The Café/Bistro. Here, you can order up some freshly made pizzas and salads and enjoy over a cold draft beer or glass of wine.

For breakfast, be sure to request one of their famous French crepes or take a fresh smoothie along with you to go. They also have a variety of made-to-order lattes, Americanos, cappuccinos, and espressos.

The property offers an abundance of on-site activities so you don’t have to leave the property. Enjoy a dip in the heated pool, rent a canoe or go paddle boarding on Sand Pond, participate in a yoga class, play foosball or board games with the kids in the Lodge, or simply kick back, relax and enjoy your accommodations.

If you are looking to explore the area, the nearby coastal towns of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport are located about 13 miles away and worth a visit. When it comes to hikes, Grover Herrick Conservation Area is just 2.2 miles from Huttopia and offers a one-mile loop. Bauneg Beg Mountain Conservation Area is less than two miles away and features a two-mile loop.

Huttopia was founded in Lyon, France in 1999 and now has more than 60 properties across Europe and three in North America in its portfolio.
