The Central Scientific Research Automobile and Automotive Engine Institute will make the next luxury limousine for President Vladimir Putin, reports The Moscow Times.
Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev made the selection. The story also stated that the institute is to be paid 700 million rubles for the job. Other Russian dignitaries also will have access to the car as well. The organization, which is the country’s leading automotive institute, received the job without even submitting a proposal.
Specific details of the deal will be outlined at a later date. Deputy industry and Trade Minister Alexei Rakhmanov indicated a common vision of the limo is forthcoming over the next few months. The question raised is whether the design should be a one-off project or a move to bolster the position of Russian-made vehicles in the global market. Apparently, it is debatable.
….But Oleg Datskiv, the director of Auto-Dealer.ru, warned that the luxury car would face stiff competition from aggressive newcomers like Hyundai and Kia. VTB Capital analyst Vladimir Bespalov agreed, saying the government would be wise to limit its production to cars for Putin.
