There are few better ways to reach Putney on a warm summer evening than by river. I met one of my oldest friends, Sophie, at Cadogan Pier and we travelled aboard the Uber Boat to Putney Bridge, arriving just a short walk from Thai Square. It made a refreshing change from the Tube, and the journey itself became part of the evening as we passed elegant houseboats, pleasure cruises and even a Metropolitan Police launch making its way along the Thames.
Thai Square Putney Bridge occupies one of the most attractive riverside positions in south-west London. Large windows overlook the water and, if you time your reservation well, dinner comes with an ever-changing backdrop of rowing boats and passing ferries. On a warm July evening, it is an undeniably appealing setting.
Our visit was to experience The Endless Horizon, a new dining concept introduced to celebrate Thai Square’s 30th anniversary. Inspired by the traditional Thai Samrap style of communal dining, it replaces the traditional buffet with freshly prepared dishes delivered directly to the table throughout a 90-minute sitting. For £30 per person, diners can enjoy unlimited starters, soups, salads and sides, together with a choice of signature main course.
The menu focuses on well-known Thai classics, from chicken satay and duck spring rolls to curries, noodles and stir-fries. We worked our way through a generous selection of starters before choosing mains, particularly enjoying the Pad Thai and the rich, gently spiced Beef Panang Curry, both of which were satisfying and full of flavour. The format lends itself well to sharing and trying a little of everything, while the breadth of the menu means there is plenty to suit families, groups and diners with different tastes. Vegetarian options are also well represented.
The appeal of The Endless Horizon lies in its simplicity. Rather than queuing at a buffet, diners remain at the table while dishes are prepared and served throughout the meal. Combined with its riverside setting, the format encourages a more relaxed pace than many unlimited dining experiences. Given the location, the pricing also represents good value for those looking to sample a broad cross-section of the menu. An optional unlimited drinks package, including Thai iced tea, Monsoon Valley wine, Chang beer and selected soft drinks, is also available.
For us, the riverside setting proved to be the highlight. It is an easy place to spend an evening, with uninterrupted views across the Thames providing a welcome sense of space that is surprisingly difficult to find elsewhere in London. The Endless Horizon offers a different take on unlimited dining and, with its riverside location and relaxed format, makes an enjoyable destination for a summer evening on the Thames.
