Deep within the floodplains and mopane woodlands of Botswana’s Okavango Delta lies Karangoma. Opened in May 2024 as Wild Expeditions’ fourth camp, it is deeply rooted in Bukakhwe San and Hambukushu culture, which starts from its name. Stemming from a Sembukushu word for a traditional ceremony where rhythmic drumming is used to heal illness and connect with ancestors, the title is a fitting reflection of how the surrounding wilderness acts as its own restorative cure.
Set upon 30,000 hectares of private wilderness in the wildlife-rich NG12 concession area of Northern Okavango, the eight tented suites (each with views out across the floodplains) are carefully hidden on a shaded peninsula of leadwood and sausage trees. Each no further than 100m from the camp’s main dining and lounge area, the canvas tents are designed by a modern take on the textures, vibrant colors, and intricate patterns of iconic Hambukushu basketry.

Guests congregate daily by the circular fire overlooking the floodplains for early breakfasts for game drives along with afternoon tea before the end of day’s activities. Surrounded by this central fire pit, they share their stories of sightings of the day and relax alongside the circular pool, enjoying a crisp sundowner while soaking in the untamed beauty of the wilderness.
“Designed to let the landscape and its original custodians tell their own ancient stories, Karangoma is a profound tribute to the heritage of the Bukakhwe San and Hambukushu people,” explains Chris Roche, co-founder of Wild Expeditions Africa. “It is about slowing down, honoring the community, and letting the healing pulse of the Delta resonate within you.”

Whether breathing in the wild sage-scented air on a morning walk or feeling the rhythmic glide of a mokoro (traditional canoe) through crystalline channels, guests feel a tangible connection to the land and its history. Further cultural immersion includes a visit to the Bukakhwe San community in nearby Gudigwa, which offers an authentic immersion into remote life in the Delta.
The camp offers a variety of activities like day and night game drives and boating to witness roaming herds of elephants, zebra, tsessebe, leopard and more, serene boating safaris, and nature lovers may take walking safaris with armed guides. And back on property, fully inclusive menus focus on highlighting the freshest bounty of the region, shared on a long communal dining table with the glittering night sky just beyond.

A stay at this remote part of the delta is rooted in ancestral history, yet beautifully crafted for the modern, intrepid traveler, It invites guests to step into a world where tradition meets simplicity and bush refinement, and find a deep, lasting connection to the Jewel of the Kalahari.
