True to form in Washington, DC, when there’s a new movement, the government gets involved. In this case, it’s the Department of Love & Romance, the brainchild of Destination DC, the official tourism agency for the city.
They have launched a “28-Day Stimulus Plan for Love & Relationships” to keep love alive in a city more known for its regulations and red-tape than romance. A few of my favorite hotel packages are mentioned here.
An easy walk to Georgetown stands the Melrose Hotel at 2430 Pennsylvania Avenue. The hotel is offering a Red Rose Romance Vacation Package that includes one night’s lodging, a bottle of champagne, romantic treats in the room, a 10 percent discount on all food and beverages purchased during your stay, two complimentary movie tickets for the night out and a late check-out (should you need it) the day of departure. The hotel is pet friendly in case you want to cuddle with your furry friends.
Taking a cue from the famous movie, An Affair to Remember, the Fairmont Washington is offering a package that includes a $100 food and beverage credit, per stay, for in-room dinner and a keepsake DVD of the movie starring Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant. The next morning, their lobby veranda and center-court garden make an excellent spot for coffee while you catch up on the day’s news. The hotel is located at 2401 M Street, NW, also an easy stroll to Georgetown.
Directly across from the White House and Lafayette Park, is the Hay-Adams, one of DC’s most revered and elaborate hotels. It’s a magnificent place to learn more about DC’s political history. Although a major renovation is in progress, the hotel is offering a romance package through February 14. It includes an overnight stay of the guest’s choice of room (superior to luxury guestrooms or suites), champagne and red roses, chocolate-dipped fruits and breakfast.
Heading into Penn Quarter, you’ll find Hotel Monaco at 700 F Street, NW promoting its signature Kimpton leopard-print bathrobes in a “Robe-Mantic?” weekend package. Yes, you can take them home. Plus, guests can use a $25 credit for in-room dining or at the hotel’s Poste-Moderne Brasserie which I’ve mentioned before as the top pick for restaurants in Penn Quarter. Save time for a visit to the National Portrait Gallery directly across the street and capture the time together with a photo on the famous steps out front; with a big smile, of course.
