While the Hamburg steak has its origins in Europe, the hamburger has become a bastion of American culture. Two new gourmet burger shops have recently opened in Atlanta, signaling a rebirth for the American classic here in the South.

With one location in Decatur, and a newer shop in the city proper, Farm Burger has been turning culinary heads for its dedication to farm-fresh ingredients. Farm Burger sources their meat from local farms who ensure their cows are grass-fed and treated humanely. Chef Dan Latham at the Buckhead location uses seasonal produce and monthly inspirations to create the custom burgers here and also to populate the ingredient list that allows guests to create their own.

The burgers themselves come from Moonshine Meats, just down the road in Athens. Farm Burger’s ethical outlook extends past the ground beef too, with a selection of white and red wines from eco-friendly vineyards, as well as salads and side dishes. Denver-based Smashburger just opened another location in Alpharetta to accompany the preexisting location in Buckhead, and has been enjoying the same rave reviews as Farm Burger. This quick and casual restaurant serves gourmet burgers as well, and the eatery name comes from a special grilling method. Fresh, never frozen, meat is placed on a flat grill and smashed into shape right there to sear in the juicy flavors.

Smashburger has a selection of specialty burgers—and chicken too—that complements the lengthy list of options for building your own sandwich. Regional franchisee Phil Wilkins has plans to open about twenty locations in the area over the next few years, so if there isn’t one near you yet, just keep an eye out and one could be popping up soon.
