Rising from the gentle countryside of County Kildare, Kilkea Castle is a place where Ireland’s layered past meets a refined, contemporary sense of escape. With a history which dates to 1180, it is one oldest inhabited castles in Ireland. Nearly a century later, and it has transformed from a formidable stronghold, to the principal residence of the Fitzgeralds, to finally its current iteration as a luxury castle hotel. Its present-day splendour is largely thanks to Jay Cashman and his wife, Christy, who purchased Kilkea Castle in 2012 and led a $35 million renovation and restoration.
Carefully ensuring a balance of preservation and luxury, the castle is set across 180 acres of landscaped parkland, ancient woodland and meandering rivers. Guests who stay on the estate – accommodations range from staying within the castle’s historic or in more contemporary courtyard and lodge accommodations – are transported to a time of opulence and enchantment. Beyond its formidable facade and below its portcullis, interiors retain a romantic, old-world character, softened by modern comforts. Ornate wood panels are paired with velvet textures, while the original stone structure can be seen in some locations not covered in plaster.

At the heart of the experience is the sense of immersion, heritage without austerity. Allowing guests to be the main character of their very own fairytale and envisioning a time when history was not only lived, but luxuriously experienced. Surrounded by woodlands and private farms around its manicured grounds, guests aren’t hurried, but encouraged to linger. Only an hour’s drive from Dublin, you feel a world away.
The castle is also home to an 18-hole championship golf course designed to complement the natural contours of the land, and not intrude. A par 70 course, it offers both challenge and serenity, where early morning mist and late afternoon light create a sense of quiet theatre for players of all levels. Beyond golf, pursuits are aplenty at Kilkea. They host a variety of activities from: tennis, falconry, cycling, birdwatching, fly-fishing, along with their Irish Wolf Hound Experience, which allows guests to and meet, interact and learn the history of these iconic majestic canine companions. They’ve also recently opened their new Activity Center, a space that features The Hideout, a room with a pool table, air table, vintage arcade games; four themed Escape Rooms, an archery range and air rifle range.

Dining at Kilkea leans into the richness of Irish produce while embracing a contemporary sensibility. Menus celebrate seasonal ingredients, with an emphasis on locally sourced meats, fresh vegetables and traditional flavors reinterpreted with finesse. Whether it is High Tea in the Drawing Room, an informal dining experience at The Bistro, or Hermione’s Restaurant, their fine dining experience at Restaurant 1180, overlooking the rose garden and their signature 18th hole.
The castle’s more recent evolution includes a focus on wellness. A modern spa facility, which includes a Thermal Suite – complete with a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, and steam room – allows guests to relax and drift away. Stone gives way to warmth, and the emphasis shifts from exploration to restoration, echoing the estate’s broader transformation from fortress to sanctuary.

Beyond the castle walls, the estate invites exploration. There is a deliberate sense of variety as guests can shape their stay as active or as restorative as they wish, moving seamlessly between pursuits. Yet perhaps Kilkea’s greatest strength lies in something less tangible, an enduring atmosphere. Evenings bring a particular kind of stillness, when the castle’s illuminated façade reflects softly against the surrounding darkness, or when guests sit around the fireplace to talk about their day’s pursuits. It is easy, in those moments, to imagine echoes of its past, when nobles and lords once lived across the grounds.
Kilkea Castle’s reinvention is not about erasing history, but about inhabiting it differently. The castle’s symbol of power has become a place of retreat and reflection; a fairytale escape rooted not in fantasy, but in over eight centuries of lived experience. An enduring allure that lies in the quiet continuity between past and present. Where every stone, story, and shadow invites guests to become part of its unfolding narrative.
