Swimming with sea turtles at the Fairmont Orchid

Jill Weinlein

Walking near the waters edge of the Fairmont Orchid in the afternoon, guests will spot multiple green sea turtles resting near black lava rocks on coarse sand. In Hawaii they are called honu and can weigh up to 300 pounds. Native to the Hawaiian Islands, these large hard-shelled sea turtles swim during the day and beach themselves in the afternoon for a nap to soak up the warm Hawaiian sun.

The Fairmont Orchid, is situated on the "Big Island" of Hawaii along the majestic Kohala Coast above Kona. It's located on a beautiful northwestern beach about 20 minutes from Kona International Airport. The 32-acre resort is surrounded by palm trees growing around dramatic black lava fields and beautiful beaches,

The resort's Hui Holokai Beach Club offers ocean and cultural activities, including complimentary snorkel, mask and fins for guests to explore an array of underwater fish including Hawaii's colorful state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapuaa. They swim peacefully among green sea turtles, wrasses, tangs, and butterflyfish.

Since the lagoon is shallow, it's an ideal spot for swimming, floating on an inflatable raft, take an outrigger canoe voyage, paddleboard, kayak and watch the nightly sunset and torch lighting ceremony.

There are two different soothing sounds of water spa experiences at the Fairmont Orchid. The 'grass meets the sea' offers pleasant ocean breezes right next to the ocean for a curtained Spa Without Walls massage experience.

The second blissful spa area is at the outdoor waterfall massage hale (huts). Massage therapists use ancient Hawaiian healing arts and locally sourced products into every experience. Guests will receive head to toe treatments while renewing their mind, body and soul in paradise.

The spa provides indoor and outdoor relaxation spaces, sauna and steam rooms, private men's and women's locker rooms, a full-service salon and bridal services. The retail space features Eminence Organic Skin Care, Kerstin Florian International and Oribe Hair Care products.
