A Brief Explanation of Augmented Reality

Whenever I try to discuss upcoming gadget of Google Glasses or augmented reality in general with people, I get asked the same question nearly every time: “What is augmented reality?” Defined simply, it’s an overlay that is added to the user’s view via technology. Currently, augmented reality apps are available through smartphones and quite of few of them are actually useful like the Yelp app.

Google Glasses are looking to take this technology to a whole new level by displaying all the reality augments through a pair of advanced glasses that are packed with sensors, microphones, transmitters and an extremely powerful microprocessor, making the heads up displays from science fiction movies something that Google has already begun to develop and perfect. They might even quickly push past what’s been seen in movies over the last few decades and deliver an augmented reality that learns what you like and provides information directly to your eyes that will interest you.

What augmented reality is not, however, is grafting technology into our eyeballs, bones or skin to become more powerful human beings, that’s just standard augmentation and I’m still waiting to hear more about commercial aspects of that as well.
