Christmas in Cornwall

The festive season is fast approaching, nights are getting shorter and temperatures are starting to plummet. I know most of us don’t want to think about it just now, but Christmas is on its way. Although normally associated with summer activities, the beautiful town of Cornwall also has a lot to offer in the winter months. So instead of trudging round the usual stores and waiting in unbearable queues this year, why not try something a little different and find some beautiful unique crafted gifts along the way?

Christmas light displays

Start the festive season off by visiting some of the towns many Christmas light displays.

Christmas in Truro begins in November with a spectacular procession of lanterns carried throughout the streets by local children, artists and youth groups. Get there early as last years City of Lights attracted over 30,000 visitors.

See the beautiful floating display of lights along Padstow harbour throughout the festive season. Taking many forms including a boat, whale and Christmas tree, this illumination is not to be missed.

Take a winter walk

You’re never too far from a beach in Cornwall, and just because its winter, it doesn’t mean that you can’t visit them. Wrap up warm and take a walk along some coastal areas such as St Ives, Crantock, Carbis Bay or Kynance Cove and see these Cornish beaches covered in snow.

You can also take some breath-taking walks up towards the Godfrey Lighthouse or the Bedruthan Steps which look stunning in mid-winter.

Get in out of the cold

Come in out of the cold and sample some of Cornwall’s welcoming hospitality in its vast array of cafes, pubs and restaurants. Padstow shopping centre is open late night for any last minute shopping, where there is also an ice rink for that added festive touch.

When it all gets too much, unwind in a beautiful luxury hotel cozied up next to a roaring fire with some mulled wine and Christmas cookies.

Christmas and craft markets

Avoid the usual Christmas rush this year and take a leisurely browse around the local festive markets in Truro and Padstow. Offering local high quality arts, food and drink there is a wide variety of jewellery, fashion, home wares and craft stands to help you choose a unique and distinctive gift for anyone. As you wander through the market you can also see live cookery demonstrations from local chefs and will be entertained with live music, brass bands and festive carol singers.
