With just a handful of weeks left in 2016, Hyatt is coming in right under the wire with the opening of their newest property in Riviera Maya this December. Located just north of Playa del Carmen, Andaz Mayakoba is situated on 590 acres of oceanfront property amongst preserved mangroves and lagoons.

Designed by architect and Costa Rican native Ronald Zürcher, the hotel’s inspiration comes from its natural surroundings, its wildness and organic forms and shapes. Zürcher also observed Mayan cultural elements and folded the area’s local heritage into his concepts. The property’s interior designers DAS Concept utilized blues, deep greens and the colors of the toucan bird for public spaces.

Housed in 28 buildings, the property’s 214 guestrooms were inspired by the more than 200 bird species found in Mayakoba. Guestrooms feature curved roofs, neutral color schemes, open layouts, natural light and local artwork. All accommodations also include a balcony or terrace overlooking the gardens, mangroves, lagoon, or the Caribbean Sea. The 41 luxury suites will boast private plunge pools and “area rugs” crafted from a collection of locally-produced Mexican cement tiles.

Among its amenities will be a spa, fitness center, beachside pool, 14,000 square feet of event and meeting spaces and four restaurants. The 10,000-square-foot Naum Spa will house six treatment rooms and many of its therapies will feature Mayan methods and locally-sourced ingredients, hand-selected for the hotel. Andaz’s dining options range from upscale Latin American cuisine at Casa Amate to an all-day buffet at Cocina Milagro and beachfront fare at both Olla Taco and Olla Ceviche serving street food and seafood.

Rooms begin at around $650 a night.
