East Dallas cafe closes doors after owner retires

Posted: Mar. 6th, 2013  |  By Michael Pearse
Cafe Lago

One of Dallas' Most historic sites will be closing their doors as its owner retires. The place I speak of is the Café Lago. After almost 13 years of service the owner, Gabriela Kovacic said that running the Café was a tough job thus throwing in the towel.

Gabriela Kovacic, owner of Café Lago, sent out an email over the weekend announcing her retirement, and the restaurant’s closing. In the email, she thanked the Casa Linda, White Rock and East Dallas residents for their patronage.

The restaurant, which was located off Garland Road near Buckner Boulevard, opened in late 2000. Kovacic said running the café was a tough job, and she was looking forward to more time to read, rest and spend time with her family.

“I know in my heart that all the lovely people I’ve met here and served will understand my position, even though they may miss a tasty nibble,” she said in the email.

Kovacic had tried to sell the restaurant last year, but the deal fell through. She said running the restaurant was exhausting and she plans to spend time with her sister, who is battling cancer.
