Bombardier Skyjet: Flying Privately Since 1997.

August 15, 2008

Private Air Charter: Mile for mile, private jet travel is more expensive than a first-class commercial airline ticket. But what value do you place on your time, comfort and convenience? Add to the cost of your airline ticket the time spent driving to a major airport, going through security, waiting to board, sitting on the tarmac, changing planes in another city, flying to your final destination and staying overnight in yet another hotel room because there are no same-day return flights available. With all the wasted time and additional financial and physical tolls associated with traditional airline travel, the cost of flying privately has become a very real option for many travelers.

With so many available private aviation choices, how do you determine which one will maximize your dollar without compromising on safety and service? One company transforming the way people fly privately is Bombardier Skyjet. Pioneering real-time online booking for private jets since 1997, Bombardier Skyjet has focused their efforts on making private jet travel simple, enjoyable and cost-effective -- providing a safe and pleasant travel experience, top value for your dollar, and the highest level of customer service. Today, Skyjet offers the flexible Skyjet Card or convenient On-Demand Charter service.

On-Demand Charter
Instead of wasting time shopping for value and safety, let the experts do it for you. Based on your criteria, the Skyjet team will search their network database of pre-qualified operators for the best value and aircraft to fit your schedule.

The Skyjet Card
If you fly more than 3 trips a year, you may want to consider the hassle-free Skyjet Card. You can choose from the Elite Program, offering travel on newer aircraft, or the cost-efficient Value Program. No need to pre-select an aircraft size or deal with upgrades and downgrades when you need a larger or smaller jet. Simply select the program you want to use for your flight and which aircraft size you need. No matter which program you choose, you have 24/7 access to the aircraft of your choice. Your deposit may be replenished as funds are used and your membership never expires. Any unused monies are 100% refundable.

Safety
Skyjet's aircraft and operator requirements go above and beyond competing programs. There are approximately 5,000 aircraft in the entire U.S. business jet fleet, but only 20% of those meet Skyjet's safety standards.

To be considered eligible for the Skyjet network, an operator must pass a stringent safety audit conducted by a top aviation auditor such as ARG/US or Wyvern. Skyjet is the only major national jet card program that requires an impartial third-party on-site audit. These audits go beyond what is required by the Federal Aviation Administration to earn an FAA Part 135 commercial operator certificate. Skyjet has developed additional crew requirements that all operators in the Skyjet Network must meet. These include minimum logged pilot hours and minimum requirements for logged hours aircraft type, as well as FAA approved annual recurrent simulator training and testing.

As a Skyjet member, you are assigned a dedicated personal travel concierge - a highly-skilled customer service expert who is available to you around-the-clock. Your concierge will reserve your flights, arrange for catering and ground transportation, answer any questions you may have and take care of every trip detail. You can also use the online real-time reservation system to make all of your travel arrangements.

Private jet travel has truly evolved into an amazing tool for the serious traveler. So if you are tired of the airlines and ready to experience a higher level of service and convenience, try Bombardier Skyjet.

Epic Elite World's Fastest VLJ

August 05, 2008   |   Contributor: James Rothaar

Very Light Jets: The Elite is the world's fastest VLJ, according to the aircraft maker, in reporting the results from test flights recently conducted over Bend, Or. The Elite, powered by two Williams Jet FJ-33-4 engines, consistently reached a speed of 385 KTAS, making it faster than the Eclipse 500 and the Phenom 100.

"It is exciting to see this kind of performance," said Epic's CEO Rick Schrameck. He added, "We always knew we were building the fastest VLJ out there, but now we've proved it."

With two certified airplanes on target for availability in late 2009, Epic is taking flight in the fiercely competitive VLJ marketplace with its Dynasty and Elite models. Both aircraft are made of carbon fiber and are designed with performance and luxury at the forefront. The jets' nautical-mile range is much higher than other VLJs. It goes hundreds of miles further compared to others in its class, such as the Eclipse 500, the Citation Mustang, or the Adam A700. Both Epic jets are lighter than most models in this category.

The Elite and the Dynasty are Epic's certified aircraft. There also are additional models in the wings that will increase the manufacturer's overall appeal in the VLJ market. The development of the LT, the Escape, and the Victory is in progress.

Epic also offers a complete personalized pilot-training program that covers the unique features of its aircraft. The base price of the Elite is $2.35 million, and the Dynasty starts at $1.95 million. See what's about to takeoff at EpicAircraft.com.

Lufthansa Large on Luxury with A380s

August 01, 2008   |   Contributor: James Rothaar

Luxury Airlines: Lufthansa set the future in motion in late 2001 when it ordered 15 A380s from Airbus. The German-based aviation firm has been a visionary of the airline industry from its inception in 1926. Lufthansa will have the largest fleet of A380s of any airline in Europe. The large A380s accommodate 550 passengers, which is 40 percent more than a Boeing 747's capacity. The spacious airbus will be deployed for point-to-point long routes as well as connecting passengers at central hubs. The A380s will be primarily used for the airline's long intercontinental flights from North America to Asia.

If you take an Airbus A340 and mount it onto a Boeing 747, the end result is an Airbus A380. The mammoth of an aircraft with a length of 239.5 feet, a wingspan of more than 260 feet, and a height just a shade taller than 79 feet flies approximately 9,200 miles between fuel refills.

Lufthansa is an airline that defers to its customers demands. The firm interviewed thousands of customers to determine how to design the cabins of the A380s.

All three sections of the spacious aircraft are being designed to be as comforting and accommodating as possible. However, the first-class passengers' quarters are truly special. These are "air suites" with luxury amenities on parity with those of world-class premier hotels. Each individual first-class seating section offers ample space and privacy to relax even during the longest flights. The amenities are topped off with a food and wine menu fit for a gourmand and an all-inclusive in-flight entertainment system that includes high-speed Internet access.

Lufthansa Means Business

Lufthansa is an airline with an array of appealing flight options. Many flyers in search of special accommodations enjoy flying Lufthansa Business Jet, as it is a smaller aircraft that luxuriantly accommodates passengers with more individual attention and super-size seating areas. The extra space gives travelers more flexibility and privacy.

Lufthansa's Airbus A319, which has a 48-seat business class, and its 44-seat business section on Boeing 737 are lined with the extraordinary roomy Lie-Flat Seats, out more than 6.5 feet. There is ample space with a reading lamp and a power connection for portable computers.

Customers flying in an Airbus aircraft A300 to A600 and on Business Jet flights have Mobile Media Players to personalize their in-flight entertainment. Passengers can choose from 65 video options, including 30 movies. Additionally, there are 25 TV programs, 10 music magazines, 100 CDs, various audio-books, radio programs, board games, games of skill, action and strategy, and language courses. It takes the doldrums out of those long-haul flights.

More Lufthansa

Did you know that Lufthansa Technik, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, redesigns commercial airplanes into VIP aircraft for private and commercial usage? Last year the firm announced a partnership with Andrew Winch Designs to redesign a Boeing 787, which normally seats more than 300 passengers, to a 30-to-50-passenger air palace with a forward lounge area, a movie theater, a conference area, a VIP master bedroom, and additional guest bedrooms. Other subsidiaries of the diverse aviation firm include Luthansa Systems, which is a leading IT service provider for the airline and aviation industry; Lufthansa Cargo, a leading airfreight delivery company; and LSG Sky Chefs, an in-flight service provider.

Eurocopter EC135: Luxury & Necessity

July 25, 2008   |   Contributor: James Rothaar

Luxury Aircraft: While the joint-venture makeover of a Eurocopter EC135 by Hermes and Eurocopter is making the rounds in various luxury-lifestyle publications, we found a few other newsworthy items involving these stupendous aircraft that are newsworthy as well. While the EC135 is a top choice of jetsetters and luxury pundits due to its FADEC (full authority digital electronic control) system, quiet engine, superior handling and maneuverability, and a cabin that accommodates up to seven passengers, it also is a dependable helicopter that is used by police departments and emergency-medical services networks worldwide.

The Polish Ministry of Health recently placed an order for 23 EC 135s for its entire fleet of emergency-medical services aircraft. The Spanish Army Disaster Response Unit just acquired its first EC135. The all-purpose vertical-landing flying machine is touted for its performance, safety, and fuel efficiency.

The reported price of a Hermes-designed Eurocopter EC135 begins at around $10 million. Visit the company's Web site, www.eurocopter.com and see its array of aircraft.

Emirates: Flights Done Right

June 09, 2008   |   Contributor: James Rothaar

Upscale Commercial Airlines: Emirates is among the most luxury-latent global airline in the world with its luxuriously appointed customized Boeing and Airbus airplanes. The airliner puts forth every effort to make a commercial flight a signature experience that is comparable to a privately chartered affair. All aircraft are customized to maximize in-flight amenities, such as the Airbus A340-500. Although the plane has an approved passenger capacity of 313, Emirates' maximum capacity is only 258, providing more space throughout the plane.

However, the Emirates "treatment" begins for passengers prior to them arriving at the airport. A chauffeur-driven limo picks is available to that offers door-to-airport service. Once onboard the airline's award-winning multilingual flight crew ensures passengers are comfortable and pampered lavishly whether flying first class or business class.

The aesthetics of the company's grandiose aircraft are very welcoming. Along with the courteous crew, the layout of the interior offers passenger plenty of personal space. The conveniently wide walking aisles eliminate the congestion usually encountered when trying to move about the plane. The cabins in first class offer complete privacy. Passengers control their area with a handheld controller that services every need from adjusting the seat to ordering food, beverages and in-flight entertainment. Children also receive extra attention with video games, group activities and specially prepared meals.

Whether flying first class, business or economy, the in-flight entertainment system, ICE, is available to all passengers on personal viewing screens. Local weather reports, location of restaurants, events, shows, and other entertainment can be accessed on screen. There are more than 600 channels with movies, special programs, music, and video games. E-mails can be sent or received through ICE as well.

The Emirates Lounge is a pre- or post-flight respite for first class, business class, and members of the airline's flight club, Skywards Gold. The lounges are enclaves of tranquility in an otherwise chaotic airport setting. Passengers can enjoy a gourmet buffet, access the Internet, or simply relax and watch television while waiting to board their flight.

The luxurious super-lounges are in airports in Auckland, Bangkok, Brisbane, Dubai, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Melbourne, Munich, New York John F. Kennedy, Perth, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Singapore, and Sydney. Additionally, there are more than 50 partnering lounges in airports around the world that welcome passengers of Emirates. The lounge at the Dubai Airport even has shower facilities.

Emirates' recently announced an agreement with Bulgari to give first class and business class flyers complimentary amenity bags of Lé Rouge products. The men's kits contain after-shave emulsion, cologne, and body lotion, and the ladies receive face emulsion, hand cream and perfume.

Emirates' fanciful flights travel to more than 100 destinations in six countries.

Putting Style Back Into Air Travel

May 12, 2008

Aircrafts: When airlines first began flying trans-Atlantic with some regularity in the 1940s, passengers considered flying a glamorous "event," dressing in their most elegant, classy clothing to commemorate the experience.

You don't have to be an international style icon to know that clearly this is not the face of travel today. It's difficult to determine an exact date or reason, but at some point within the past two decades, traveling became an excuse for people to slip into something TOO comfortable. With the prevalence of track suits and t-shirts on airplanes today, one has to wonder if people are choosing to wear these outfits specifically for traveling, or simply refusing to get dressed in the morning! Perhaps it began with the incredibly shrinking leg room or with the stripped-down passenger amenities; or maybe it was the rise of endless security lines. Whatever the reason, travelers seem to now think that they have a free pass when it comes to travel attire, with comfort revered above all.

With the introduction of the iconic Concorde in the late 1970s, British aviation became synonymous with class and style. Today, civilized airlines pay homage to the glamorous days of travel, but still encompasses a sleek and sophisticated modern aesthetic.

I offer the following guidelines for dressing comfortably and stylishly:

  • Since you never know what temperature the plane or your destination city will be, layering is key. Invest in a great cashmere sweater or bring along a structured blazer. Mixing and matching on the plane with varying sleeve lengths allows travelers to extend wardrobes as well.

  • Simple dark denim or black or brown slacks are great for everyone. They allow travelers to move easily, always look great and can hide any pesky spots or spills from turbulence.

  • Just say "no" to sweats. Everyone knows a track suit is comfortable, which is why they're most appropriate for the gym.

  • A great pair of stylish flat shoes is preferable for travelers. Flip-flops are better left poolside.

  • For men, solid or striped button-down shirts look put-together and structured. Invest in the new wrinkle-free versions to ensure a sleek, clean look no matter what.

  • Slogan tees give other passengers an immediate first impression whether wanted or not. Stick with the basics and leave the slogans at home.

  • Although accessories should be kept to a minimum, sunglasses add instant glamour and cover jet-lag eyes. They're a staple.

  • Stick with natural fabrics which breathe easily and move with the body They will help you look (and smell!) your best upon landing and making your way out of the airport.

Following these simple guidelines will have you arriving at your destination looking chic and sophisticated. After all, you never know who you'll meet traveling, whether on the ground or in the air.

  • Linear Air Set to Eclipse Competition

    May 11, 2008

Jet Charters: Linear Air is poised to revolutionize the private airline industry with its two-tiered charter flight service. The on-demand operator is gearing up to make private-jet chartering affordable to flyers nationwide. The firm draws from the best offerings of both private charters and commercial airlines for its business model. A fleet of six modified Cessna Brand Caravan, which comfortably accommodates eight passengers, is used for shared and private charters. The interior of the Caravans is modified to provide more cabin space. Direct from the factory, the luxury-latent turbo-prop seats 12 travelers.

Over the next two years, the progressive company is adding 30 Eclipse 500 jets to its convoy of aircraft. The well-tooled high-performance VLJ will be used for private-charter flights. The twin-engine jet transports four (plus two pilots) and travels nearly twice as fast as the Caravan. It has a range of 1,000 miles and a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet. Since its in-flight operating costs are comparable to the Caravans, Linear's customers receive an upgrade in service without having to pay accompanying higher fees. The economical Eclipse 500 is the most efficient plane in its class as rated by AR/GUS.

Shared charters are currently offered from Washington, DC, to Outer Banks, NC, Teterboro, NJ, to Nantucket, Mass., and Bedford, Mass., to Nantucket. Private charters are available out of NYC (Teterboro), Washington, DC, and the New England area. Private charters to the Caribbean are provided from April 1 to October 31. The company provides on-demand flights to approximately 500 cities.

Many highly regarded publications are chronicling the two-mode chartering service offered by Linear Air, such as Forbes.com, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Boston Globe. The future of the private airline industry is evolving in Concord, Mass., today.

My Other Ride is a Bentley

    May 01, 2008

Private Aviation Services: How do you satisfy the customer who has everything? For luxury brands, that is one of the eternal questions - and one crucial to private aviation in particular. Private aircraft are at the top of the luxury heap; their clients' are the wealthiest people in the world. And perhaps no company has worked harder to cracking the code of how to satisfy the earning elite than Blue Star Jets.

"For a long time the traditional private jet ad had a business man in a suit walking off a plane, but today's customer is not juts a guy in the suit", says Ricky Sitomer, CEO of Blue Star Jets. "This is a finicky clientele, they move around a lot, they are diverse, and they make you work for their loyalty." To appeal to them and keep their attention, you have to think outside of the box.

Blue Star Jets first caught our eye last year when they rolled out private aviation's first rewards program, allowing customers to receive points for every dollar they spend and can be redeemed at an online store for luxury items such as Bang Olufsen televisions, diamond jewelry, and in-flight massages. Clients with open debit accounts accrue points at a rate of five to one. The program met with success, but left the company in the rather interesting position of figuring out how to further demonstrate its customer appreciation.

Starting this past January, the company has begun gifting their top clients with a Bentley Continental GT.

The program is simple: Put up $1 million on your Blue Star Jets SkyCard and the company will put a Bentley Continental GT in your driveway for a year. "We have a lot of car lovers, and a Bentley is the most luxurious thing besides a private jet so we are giving it to them," said the CEO.

Sitomer, a car lover himself, knows first hand. His fleet includes a Bentley Continental GT, as well as a Ferrari Maranello, a Ferrari Mondial Cabriolet, two Range Rovers and an Escalade. Which is his favorite?

"Right now I would have to say the Bentley because it is the newest," he explains, "but I am partial to the Maranello, I must say, because it is a Ferrari and it drives like a race car."

The company, which was founded shortly after 9/11 by Sitomer and fellow business partner Todd Rome, operates as a private jet broker. According to Sitomer, after 9/11 increasing concerns about safety and the inconvenience of commercial travel started pushing more people to look into flying privately, but were not flying enough to justify owning their own aircraft.

"There are a lot of new fliers, a different generation of moneyed individuals from various different backgrounds are utilizing private jets to go to second or third homes to to Europe for the summer or to see their mothers in Florida," says Sitomer.

With offices all over the world, including Aspen, New York, Beverly Hills, Miami, Chicago and London, Sitomer has seen the market shift with his own eyes. With such a variegated customer base, Sitomer has adopted a philosophy of customer service that he calls "personalized luxury".

"People have their own ideas of luxury, so we try to accommodate their ideas," Sitomer explains. "If you want catering from Nobu or a yoga instructor on board or a facial or customized aircraft for your trip, we will arrange it."

Business theory tells you that trying to be all things to all people is usually a recipe for disaster. But for Blue Star Jets, success is less dictated by following the conventional wisdom than following the numbers. Their customer retention rate is at an industry best 91 percent. And they have again been ranked No. 1 in customer service and brand luxury by The Luxury Institute, besting names like Net Jets and Marquis.

The Rocket Racing League: Yes, it is rocket science!

    April 01, 2008

Luxury Aircraft: This may get the aliens to start paying closer attention to us Earthlings. The Rocket Racing League (RRL), in pursuit of pushing aerodynamic technology to its limit, has officially broken ground on its first phase hangars. Rocket races will operate similarly to auto races except for the "virtual" sky track. Courses are expected to be approximately two miles long, one mile wide, and about one mile high, running perpendicularly to spectators. The X-Racers (rocket planes) will take off from a runway either staggered or side-by-side, depending upon the specifics of the event. The "air" track will be based upon Grand Prix-competition standards and have long straight-aways, vertical ascents and deep banks. Pilots will follow their own virtual tunnel (track) and be safely separated to avoid collisions.

Founded by X Prize founder Dr. Peter H. Diamandis and two-time Indy 500 team winner Granger Whitelaw, the duo plan to run competitions across the U.S. and internationally. Interplanetary competitors and Earthlings are encouraged to sign up at www.rocketracingleague.com/index.html.

    Fly Solo with PlaneSmart!

    March 31, 2008

Fractional Ownership for Pilots: PlaneSmart! offers a fractional-ownership that caters specifically to pilots who do their own flying. The company handles the "mess and stress" most commonly associated with ownership of smaller, four-seat aircrafts. A fleet of Cirrus SR22-G2 and SR20-G2 aircrafts is available 24/7. The firm provides aircraft insurance, storage, fuel, cleaning, and maintenance. Additionally, pilots receive transitional training to fly the SR22-G2s and SR20-G2s.

One of the perks of this program is not only the guaranteed availability of an airplane upon request, but knowing that it is a well-maintained SR22-G2 or SR20-G2. Cirrus may be the safest small aircraft ever designed. as it has a single-lever power control, a side-yoke control column, a four-point safety harness for each seat, and its overall construction is unparalleled in safety. The acclaimed Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) deploys a parachute that enables a plane to land safely despite any unfavorable circumstances. All SR20s and SR22s are identically equipped with Avidyne "Glass cockpit," dual Garmin GNS-430 GPS, Skywatch traffic avoidance, in-cockpit weather data link, autopilot, and much more.

There is a one-time purchase fee for interest in a specific craft or a block-time license; a one-time fee for pilot transition training; a monthly management fee; and an hourly operational fee.

Texas-based PlaneSmart! is a plain smart choice for pilots who prefer to leave the flying to themselves.
