New York-based Campion Platt has done everything, from designing homes and boutique hotels to his own line of custom furniture, but no matter what the project is, Platt always has luxury on his mind. To him, luxury isn't about the flashiest bejeweled furniture accents or the dollar tag on that new Persian rug, it’s about open spaces you can breathe and relax in. It may seem simple enough, but making a Manhattan home into a light and airy space isn't that easy. Platt was kind enough to take some time to chat with us about how he defines luxury, his own personal style, and the craziest client request he's gotten so far.
Last week Finnair revealed their new cabin design for their flagship next-generation Airbus A350 XWB aircraft, which is due for service next year. Designed by Helsinki firm dSign Vertti Kivi & Co. (the same company that designed Finnair's Premium Lounge at Helsinki Airport), the aircraft boasts a large cabin with panoramic windows and comfortable seating arrangements for business class passengers.
Foodies are in no short supply these days, evidenced by the surge of pop-up restaurants, the rise of the celebrity chef and the emphasis placed on not just a good meal, but an epicurean experience. The whole thing is a marketing dream if you know how to spin it and a couple of years ago Patrón came up with the great idea to launch the Patrón Secret Dining Society, a branch of the brand that throws ultra-exclusive invite-only parties in secret locations. Guests arrive to find an unending flow of tequila cocktails created by master mixologists and food prepared by high-profile culinary names like Marcus Samuelsson or Rick Bayless.
Gooding & Company saw some pretty big profits last weekend at their two-day Pebble Beach luxury auto auction where they realized over $106 million. The official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance apparently sold 107 of their 121 lots, with the average price per car being $990,699 (they even sold 30 cars for over one million), and an overall 88 percent sale rate. To make the auction even more impressive, 16 new records were set for Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Porsche.
Airstream announced today that they are adding another model to their touring couch lineup, the new Interstate Grand Tour. Promising tons of space to please any discerning luxury traveler, the luxury auto has plenty of counter space, storage, a workspace and optional screen doors. Plus, this one isn't overwhelming in size, which makes it great for a first-time buyer or for someone looking for a cozier coach.
We like flashy iPhone cases just as much as the next guy, but sometimes we prefer a more minimal look, especially if it still protects your phone. The limited-edition Radius Ti Titanium case for the iPhone 5/5s is a cool design that doesn't engulf the entire smartphone, instead only attaching to the four corners to create an X frame on the back—someone tell Patrick Stewart.
With the US Open next week, we all have tennis on the mind, which makes the first-ever Taste of Tennis Week in New York City a must-attend event. Taking place August 20-23, the week-long pre-US Open event will include the Taste of Tennis Gala (this year will be it's 15th) and tons of "tennis-meets-food" events—like the Celebrity Chef Tennis Challenge on August 20 and Party with The Pros on August 23.
The Ixion jet concept from design firm Technicon forgoes traditional windows in favor of floor-to-ceiling panorama screens—which isn't really a new idea at all, since Spike Aerospace announced that their supersonic jet would have digital screens earlier in the year. The new concept gives fliers a high-resolution livestream "video" of what's going on outside so they have something to gaze at while flying.
If you're going to name a motorcycle X132 Hellcat Speedster, the design and performance better back it up. Thankfully, Confederate Motorcycles don't have to worry about that, since their all-new bike seems to be living up to its name.
The Renovo Coupe, the flagship luxury car from Renovo Motors, was officially introduced to the world today at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and is being hailed as the "first all-electric American supercar." With its 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds, 1,000 foot/pounds of direct-drive torque, and its super fast charge time of 30 minutes (making it circuit-ready), we know we're not the only ones excited for the Renovo Coupe's 2015 production.
If you were listening close enough last season during an especially emotional moment on NBC’s Parenthood, you may have heard Allman Brown’s beautifully written song Sons and Daughters playing in the background. For me, it was when vocalist Liz Lawrence joined him on the chorus, filling his melodies with wonderfully placed harmonies, that I knew I had to hear more.
An age-old mark of luxury, caviar has long been a delicacy associated with wealth and royalty. But not all "caviar" is created equal and if you think you have tried the best, you might want to think again. While today there are many different kinds of roe being marketed as caviar, according to the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Life Fauna and Flora (CITES) only one species of fish makes the cut to be officially classified as a host to the coveted condiment, the best and priciest of which comes from Russia. "Real" caviar is harvested from the sturgeon or paddlefish, and based on the quality are classified in four types, with beluga topping the list as the most prized, then osetra, sterlet and sevruga.
Most people have no idea just what goes into landscape design, mistakenly believing that the job ends with plant placement. In reality, you should be thinking of hiring the right designer for the job outside just as seriously as you handle the one for inside the home—especially if you want your luxury residence to look like your celebrity neighbor's. After all, the outdoor living space is always what makes the first impression so you better make it a good one.
Any history fan will know that the Tower of London is a pretty fascinating place, especially the Martin Tower (or Jewel Tower)—which is just one of the 21 towers found in the building. The tower used to be the home of the Crown Jewels—which Colonel Thomas Blood tried to famously steal in May 1671—and was even used as a prison for a little while, but now holds an exhibition called Crowns and Diamonds. Thanks to TRULY, you can experience a super exclusive, private three-course dinner surrounded by 12,000 diamonds. Aside from the gourmet food, you also get to enjoy a Champagne reception in the Hall of Monarchs, and witness the Ceremony of the Keys where the tower is locked. You can either book the dinner for just two people or for up to 12, but no matter who you take, we're pretty sure it's a dinner you will never forget.
Sometimes luxury means a product that's so unusual and cool that it's completely unique in its market, like the "world's first levitating Bluetooth speaker," the OM/ONE—yeah, it actually floats. Designed by OM Audio, this music gadget is pretty much the perfect gift to give someone who has everything, because we're willing to bet that a suspended speaker orb is something they probably don't have.
Recent heat wave-induced ponderings brought up the thought: If Cleopatra bathed in milk, why couldn't the modern version be a giant, frozen milkshake bath? Okay, so actually bathing in ice cream probably isn't the best idea—for many obvious reasons—but you can still drink the sweet concoction for all three meals of the day if you want to.
Alexandra Llewellyn has designed and created luxury bespoke backgammon boards for some seriously wealthy clientele—even Richard Branson and model Elle Macpherson—and you can get one commissioned for yourself featuring whatever imagery you want. Some past commissions include a couple who wanted to commemorate their relationship and a board that celebrated another client's Mexican roots. Of course, you can always buy a Limited Edition backgammon board, like the hand-painted design pictured above, which is called Lily and limited to just 10.
It seems like celebrities are always in competition with one another (whether it's real or media-created), from who has the best body to who is reigning the selfie world (well, maybe Kim Kardashian is the only one who cares about that). One way to launch yourself above the rest is to get a really amazing luxury car, since the automotive world is still one of the best ways to show your status.
Whether you have the talent or not, the Pinoramic 120 Series 2 camera from Mottweiler Studio will certainly make you look like a professional photographer—especially considering this one needs actual film! Made using bent-laminated curly Mahogany with brass hardware accents, the Pinoramic camera uses a 120-degree, 6x12cm format, has a unique tilt-load system, and a pneumatic/magnetic shutter with remote bulb operation.
Cooking is one of our favorite pastimes and we're always looking for new dishes to try out. But just because we enjoy cooking doesn't mean we know all there is to know—far from it—so sometimes we like to join in on a fun cooking class and Quattro Passi's Cookery School in Italy is definitely on our list. The two Michelin-starred restaurant, owned and run by Antonio Mellino, is known for its deliciously authentic Campania cuisine and that's exactly what their cooking courses are designed to teach.
Not too long ago I was invited to join some other journalists to train with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at the Royal Canadian Mountain Police (RCMP) Academy in Regina—a once in a lifetime opportunity. This was one of the hardest 24 hours of my life, however the pain quickly faded since our valiant efforts were rewarded with a stay at the historic Hotel Saskatchewan Radisson Plaza, one of Canada's grand railway hotels.
Floating restaurants and hotels are hardly a new concept, but it's a little more unusual for an esteemed luxury yacht brand to be the name behind such projects. Sunreef Yachts was approached by a couple customers to create such custom made projects in London and Dubai and considering their reputation for some of the finest luxury catamarans, the customers knew exactly what to expect.
Robin Williams has meant so much to so many people and we're absolutely gutted by the loss. The news of his death has rolled across the world rapidly, popping up on every news outlet and text message, and it's one that no one was prepared for. The 63-year-old lifted us up and made us all lighter the more we laughed, and the thought that he was weighed down with his own sadness breaks our hearts. From granting our wishes and encouraging the poet within us to taking us through the afterlife and being the best fake British nanny ever, Williams did everything with the same childlike glee that he brought to Hook. He was insane in the best of ways and he'll be missed.
In the last few years, Rolls-Royce has had great success in appealing to a larger North American consumer base— specifically female and younger customers—through the introduction of new models such as the first Ghost model in 2009 and Wraith in 2013. Unsurprisingly the United States as a whole remains one of the most significant individual markets for Rolls-Royce, with a handful of areas experiencing remarkable record-breaking growth in the last year alone. But do you know what goes into the craftsmanship of each car?
Lexus is celebrating their 25th anniversary with a new limited edition Crafted Line of luxury cars, which are set to debut at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance August 15-17. Not satisfied with just the autos, Lexus also partnered with TUMI to create a special luggage collection to go with their new motorized beauties.
