A-Rod’s 500th Homerun Ball Fetches $103,579

February 12, 2010   |   Contributor: James Rothaar

Collectibles: The ball Alex Rodriguez hit for his 500th homerun in the Major Leagues sold for $103,579 to an anonymous buyer online. SCP Auctions were the administrators of the proceedings. While the baseball A-Rod hit for his 500th homerun did not sell for nearly as much as other recent big-homerun balls in recent years, a six-figure payout for a sports collectible is noteworthy.

The NY Daily News in its reporting of the incident stated the amount the ball fetched was “modest” when compared to other big homerun balls, such as the $750,000 plus that the ball Barry Bonds hit to become MLB’s all-time leader in homeruns sold for, and the ball Mark McGwire hit for his 70th homerun, in 1998, that sold for more than any other MLB homerun ball at $3 million.

Nice pitch, NY, but you’re outa here! Follow the value. Those two balls are from record-breaking events, one-off events, while A-Rod’s 500th homerun is a personal milestone that has been achieved by others. Twenty-five MLB players have hit 500 or more homeruns in MLB history. It is like comparing apples and oranges. If A-Rod breaks Barry Bond’s records and those balls sell for less than Barry’s, then we can talk.

Extra innings: Four players currently active have hit more than 400 homeruns entering the 2010 season.

Germany’s Playground for Men Lets Boys be Boys

January 25, 2010   |   Contributor: Carly Zinderman

Leisure:Some guys never grow up and a theme park in Germany celebrates them. Part of a rising trend of “manusement" parks around Europe, Männerspielplatz allows man-boys to play with grown-up toys.

Translated, Männerspielplatz means “men’s playground” and is filled with all sorts of traditional male favorites. For an entire day, men (and women) can play on excavators, wheel loaders, caterpillars, Quad, ATV and other machinery.

Originally a temporary display, Männerspielplatz has become a permanent fixture for visitors to offroad, jackhammer giant boulders, shoot things with a bow and arrow, hang glide and more.

Other similar manusement parks have popped around Europe, including Tanks-a-Lot in the UK, where you can drive tanks over tiny machines and Diggerland, also in the UK, a fusion of amusement park and construction machinery.

With so much male testosterone, it’s no wonder that Trendhunter.com describes Männerspielplatz as a “Disneyland for Dudes.”

Gourmet Dog Food: A Perfect Pooch

January 14, 2010   |   Contributor: Katherine Sutton

Pets: Three weeks ago I had an epiphany filled with guilt: how could I be savoring the freshest produce, the best organic milk, and the tastiest hormone free meats while Susie, my 5 year old spunky poodle, was eating the same canned dog food day in and day out? Not that I thought Susie should be tableside with me at the Michelin star restaurants I’m fortunate to frequent. I’ve just been more aware of what I eat and how great I feel. Therefore, perhaps Susie could be healthier and live longer with better food.

Apparently, I’m not the only dog owner who has had this thought. A stroll down the dog food isle or a Google search for “dog food” will show anyone the plethora of pooch cuisine available. With so many options-canned, dried, raw, organic, “hormone free!,” “vitamins added!”-I decided to dig up some research and ask a few dog care experts what was best.

Memoirs of a Real Harem Girl

January 07, 2010   |   Contributor: Christina Stewart

Luxury Leisure: Sex, power and money always make for a good read, but when combined with the first-hand account of a theater-school-dropout-turned-high-priced-working girl, you’ve got yourself one exciting page turner. This spring, you’ll have the chance to read the memoirs of Jillian Lauren, a young American woman who spent 18 months as a member of Prince Jefri of Brunei’s 40-girl harem.

Lauren’s sorted tale began when she was offered $20,000 to party for two weeks with the likes of a rich businessman, a proposition that ultimately led to a full-time gig for the 18-year-old beauty. As reported by Luxist, the book, Some Girls: My Life in a Harem, conveys Lauren’s candor and humor as she tells the captivating story of her life in the world of high-class prostitution. The book is filled with stories about Lauren and her exceptionally beautiful co-workers servicing the prince, who just happens to own the New York Palace and the Hotel Bel-Air, as well as his older brother, the sultan of Burnei and their high-rolling allies.

The candid memoir of this harem girl is expected to hit the shelves in late April, 2010.
