collector's wine, made of a classic Bordeaux blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
The ratio is 74 percent Merlot with a remainder of Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged 24 months in small French oak (Allier) barrels. Grown in the Pickberry Vineyard on the slopes of Sonoma Mountain, the final results of the wine offer an astonishingly deep red color with a deep and complex aroma.
Not for the faint of heart, the fruit-filled flavors are strong with plum and red currant highlighted by something herbal and offer rich smoky notes of tobacco, vanilla and cacao nib. The tannins are soft, but definitely present, so those who like a softer wine may want to let it sit for a few more years.
The March 2010 Wine Enthusiast awarded the 2006 Pickberry 94 points, saying, "Quite a noble, interesting wine that bears comparing with the best of Napa Valley. The flavors are somewhat herbal, with a sage and tobacco edge to the blackberries, dark chocolate and graphite. Feels classy and important."
