A Modern Gem in Ancient Athens

Back in 2011, the New Hotel in Athens was literally new. Even after five years, the New Hotel is still feeling fresh long after it’s name has taken on a more figurative meaning. In a city where ancient architecture reigns supreme, the New Hotel is the city’s coolest upscale, modern design property. The New Hotel takes inspiration from the classic Athens aesthetic and completely refashions it for the modern day.

The hotel has 79 avant-garde rooms that stand in contrast to the city’s prehistoric sites, making it a contemporary, urban oasis after a long day of sightseeing. The interior is both whimsical and smart. Each of the spacious rooms have been transformed into pieces of art, following three carefully chosen themes celebrating Athens. Whether it’s the evil eye guarding against any bad omens befalling your trip, the Greek folklore characters of Karagiozis running around the room, or the historic postcards showing a snapshot of Athens, each room is perfectly produced. Alongside these quirky art installations are the comforts which make any hotel room successful including a huge bed, a well-appointed bathroom and French doors leading you onto a balcony with sweeping city views.

The majority of the hotel’s lobby interiors have been created by recycling items from the previous Olympic Palace hotel which stood in its place. Furniture from the hotel’s incarnation has been plastered onto the walls of the lobby, creating an uber-cool artistic masterpiece that combines old and new.

At just a half hour drive from Athens International Airport, the New Hotel is right in the heart of it all. The hotel is centrally located in the hip Plaka neighborhood so you will experience the best the city has to offer with ease. Its enviable location is next to the Greek Parliament at Syntagma Square and in the shadow of the Acropolis, which means that you’re just a few minutes stroll from the city’s main attractions. It’s also an easy walk to Hadrian’s Arch, the 1896 Olympic Stadium, the flea market at Monastiraki Square, as well as Ermou, Athens’ main shopping promenade. It would be hard to find a better base for a quick stop in the ancient city. The hotel’s cool vibe attracts a trendy clientele, so if you have classical taste, you might feel out of place. Design buffs with a modern sensibility will absolutely adore this property!
