A Witty Romp Through Time: Horrible Histories Returns to the West End

Horrible Histories

This summer, the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue will echo with roars of laughter, gasps of surprise, and the unmistakable sound of gleeful squeals as Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain – The Best Bits! makes its triumphant return to the West End. Running from 31 July to 31 August 2025, this riotous production promises to be the perfect theatrical escape for families during the summer holidays.

Presented by the ever-brilliant Birmingham Stage Company, this production is more than just a play – it’s a gloriously gruesome celebration of 20 years of Horrible Histories Live on Stage, and an astonishing 14 years in London’s theatrical heartland. The new show, curated as a “greatest hits” of the much-loved Barmy Britain series, is a whistle-stop tour through some of the most hilariously horrible moments in British history.

From Boudicca’s fearsome revolts to the decidedly unpleasant (and unwashed) Nightsoil Men, the show is an irreverent blend of education and entertainment. Audiences are invited to dodge the plague, outwit highwayman Dick Turpin, and escape the grim grip of the infamous body-snatching duo Burke and Hare. It’s British history told as it should be: fast-paced, fantastical, and thoroughly fun.

The creative pedigree behind the production is as impressive as the historical cast of characters it portrays. Directed by Neal Foster, with performances from Emma Swan and Foster himself, the show features set design by Jacqueline Trousdale, lighting by Jason Taylor, sound by Nick Sagar, music by Matthew Scott, and choreography from Kenn Oldfield – a team that understands how to conjure magic from mayhem.

With the “nasty bits” firmly left in, Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain – The Best Bits! is an uproarious antidote to dusty textbooks. It is theatre that educates without preaching, entertains without condescending, and, most of all, embraces the absurdities of history with cheeky charm. Suitable for ages 5 to 105 (with a gentle warning that 106-year-olds may not be amused), it’s a theatrical romp that’s become a beloved West End fixture for good reason.

Whether you're a history buff, a theatre lover, or simply seeking a smart and side-splitting family outing, make this summer one to remember — in the most delightfully horrible way.
