Jeff Smith and Jennifer Scherer Share Healthy Aging Tips That Build Strength, Mobility, and Financial Security

The Fitness & Finance Radio podcast by Jeff Smith and Jennifer Scherer

Everyone is interested in aging healthy and smart, but they may not know what it takes to do so. Knowing some of the things that can help people age strong and smart can go a long way toward improving longevity and the overall journey. Wellness, whether financial or physical, isn't something that happens. It is something that people achieve with planning and commitment, and the good news is that it isn't as difficult as it may seem.

“Aging strong and smart will go a long way toward providing a happier life,” said Jennifer Scherer, a registered dietitian nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, certified personal trainer, and owner of Fredericksburg Fitness Studio. “This is something that my husband and I are passionate about and love to share information with others to help them. With a beneficial plan, individuals and families can thrive as they age, physically, mentally, and financially.”

Scherer and her husband, Jeff Smith, have a podcast that focuses on holistic wellness and retirement financial planning. The goal is to provide people with the tools and tips they need to age strong and age smart. Together, they address the topics that people need information about in these areas, often unaware that aspects such as stress, wellness, and healthy aging are interconnected.

There are a lot of things that people can do to help ensure they are aging strongly and smartly, including:

Making health a priority. The health of one's physical, mental, and financial well-being should be a top priority. Those who make it a priority will increase their chances of a good outcome. Determine what you want in your life in terms of healthy aging and commit to making choices that will improve and maintain healthy outcomes.

Ensuring financial security. This is a significant issue for most people, because nobody can afford to outlive their money. To help reduce stress and the economic burden of aging, it's crucial to age smart, especially when it comes to finances. It's equally important to remember that financial health and physical health are connected and impact one another, so both areas need to be of concern, addressed, and planned for.

Staying positive. Maintaining an optimistic outlook on life can help people live longer, healthier lives. According to the National Institute on Aging, optimism is associated with a longer lifespan and improved emotional health. Those who are optimistic tend to experience fewer negative emotions, less stress, and better health. Optimism is a modifiable characteristic, so anyone can work at making this positive change.

Being challenged. It is essential to keep one's mind mentally challenged as one ages. Find new things to explore, learn about, and try. This will help keep the mind healthier and aging smarter. Whether learning a new skill or trying a new physical activity, the brain will appreciate the stimulation.

Getting help. There are resources available to help individuals achieve greater success with their health and financial goals. Working with a personal trainer or financial planner, for example, can help ensure that health and financial matters are effectively addressed, providing stability and reducing stressors.

“Aging strong, aging smart starts with a plan that includes both of those aspects," said Jeff Smith, a financial planner and owner of Fredericksburg, Va.-based The Retirement Smith. "Without a plan in place, it will be difficult to achieve these things, but with a solid and realistic plan, the sky is the limit. We can't let our financial and physical selves, now and later in retirement, happen. We need to lay the foundation to ensure that we get out of it what we want and need."
