To mark the close of the Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty retrospective at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, fashion photographer Nick Knight and his team at SHOWStudio released a video to highlight the best of McQueen’s designs. Using never-before-seen clips from his 2010 film To Lee, With Love, Nick, Knight created a three-minute homage to his close friend of almost 14 years. With help from W's Fashion & Style Director Edward Enninful and curation by current McQueen Creative Director Sarah Burton, the short is a hauntingly beautiful tribute to the late designer.
The film, done entirely in the vein of McQueen, is dark, hypnotic and just a little terrifying. Models seemingly float throughout the scenes, moving between darkness and light just long enough to see the shape of a gown or details of a bodice. The music strays from classical melodies to glitchy silences, while the gowns complement the tune with delicate feather dresses or angular, edgy silhouettes. It is simultaneously the product of nightmares and dreams, and a wonderful memorial to a designer known for bringing Gothicism and dark romanticism to fashion. McQueen would have loved it.
