Missoni has long been known for its eccentric colorways and on-trend silhouettes, but this season Angela Missoni opted for something a bit more simplistic. At the brand’s Spring/Summer 2016 presentation during Milan Fashion Week, basics came down the runway—polo shirts, maxi skirts, and palazzo pants—in a series of uncomplicated stripes with a focus on neutral and primary colors. It was by no means a minimalist collection, but for Missoni it was clearly a step back and felt like a revisit to the brand’s roots.

Designing with fabrics like crépon, silk and wool knit, allowed the collection to use texture and color rather than shape to communicate the trends. The use of the brand’s iconic zig-zag pattern was minimal, and instead vertical and horizontal stripes reigned on the runway. A few diagonal prints and more abstract patterns kept the lineup from feeling too sporty. While black, white, red, yellow and blue were among the most popular colors in the collection, they were rounded out with a few shades of orange, lilac and green.

The collection was filled with maxi dresses, swimwear, crop tops, wrap dresses and tank tops, all paired with printed Converse sneakers and skinny scarves. They brought back the duster coat with a vengeance, and the long sweater was paired with almost every piece on the catwalk. The clear standouts were a series of monochromatic, sheer ribbed knits that came in eye-catching colors like rose pink, cobalt blue and bright red. While it wasn't a striking collection, it was a refreshing reimagining of the brand’s origins.
