Julien Macdonald Does Not Design for the Average Woman

Beyoncé looks killer in a skin-baring, bedazzled mini dress, but not everyone can pull off such a theatrical design. Julien Macdonald, on the other hand, thinks the look was made for the masses. As is his forte, the designer sent skintight dresses, barely-there fabrics and a series of strategically cut out numbers down the Fall 2016 runway.

If you are Beyoncé, or have a body to match, then you’re left with a gorgeous selection of partywear in holographic prints, metallic beading and glittering crystals which is de rigueur for Macdonald. Silhouettes were clean and form-fitting, only straying from this briefly with a few fringe and feather pieces. Thigh-high cuts, asymmetrical hemlines and strategically placed cutouts gave curve and form to even the most shapeless of models.

This season his added use of straps, buckles and silhouettes felt hyper sexualized. Leash-like straps hung around the models' necks and fell down their breastbones, shoes were wrapped in a series of heavy buckles, and knitting was so fine that with the metallic sheen it almost looked like chainmail. Some of the men’s ready-to-wear, which was presented with womenswear this season, was so delicate and sheer that it looked like the male models weren’t wearing anything at all.
