Each evening in Santa Barbara County, a mist creeps inland from the Pacific and settles softly over the hills. Locals call it “sea smoke,” a fitting name for the fog that gives one of California’s most coveted wines its distinctive allure.
Where Fog Meets Sun
Sea Smoke Estate Vineyard lies in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills, a cool-climate pocket within the Santa Ynez Valley that’s become legendary for Pinot Noir. Founder Bob Davids planted the first vines here in 1999, fulfilling his dream of creating a California vineyard that could stand alongside the world’s best.
What makes this patch of land extraordinary is its natural balance. South-facing slopes soak in the sun by day, while marine fog drifts through the canyon each evening, cooling the vines and extending the growing season. The result is fruit that ripens slowly, developing vivid flavor and lively acidity—the hallmark of Sea Smoke’s wines.

The Taste of Place
Each vintage of Sea Smoke Pinot Noir captures that dance between richness and freshness that makes the wines so addictive. Southing, named for the vineyard’s southern exposure, is graceful and aromatic, brimming with notes of red cherry, rose petal, and spice. Ten, its bolder sibling, blends ten Pinot clones into a darker, more layered expression, with black-cherry depth and a touch of earth that speaks of the clay soils below. And then there’s Grand, the estate’s crown jewel. Made only from the most exceptional lots and aged patiently for years before release, it’s a wine of intensity—sumptuous yet refined, the kind collectors open on life’s milestone occasions.
Even those who prefer whites or sparkling wines find something to love here. Sea Smoke’s Chardonnay is elegant and restrained, with citrus brightness and a whisper of oak. Their Sea Spray Blanc de Noirs, made entirely from Pinot Noir in the méthode Champenoise style, is a revelation—crisp, complex, and luxuriously dry, with a finish that lasts as long as the coastal sunset.

A Vineyard with a View
Visiting the Sta. Rita Hills feels like entering another climate zone entirely. The vineyard unfolds along rolling hillsides just inland from the Pacific, its rows of vines tracing the contours of the canyon. Mornings are bright and breezy; afternoons turn misty as the fog returns.
Because the region’s mountain range runs east to west—one of the few in the country that does so—it acts like a natural wind tunnel. Cool ocean air channels directly through the valley, keeping the grapes from over-ripening and giving the wines their signature freshness. It’s that meeting of fog and sun, tension and ease, that makes Sea Smoke wines taste so alive.

The Team Behind the Magic
At the helm is Director of Winemaking Don Schroeder, who has been with Sea Smoke since 2003 and knows every slope and soil variation by heart. He describes his philosophy simply: “The vineyard tells us what to do.” Under his watch, each block of vines is harvested at the precise moment of balance, when fruit, tannin, and acidity align. The goal is to craft wines that are expressive but never heavy, Pinots with depth, grace, and the unmistakable imprint of this cool coastal site.
Working alongside him is General Manager Matt Steel, an Australian native with a deep background in cool-climate viticulture. He sees clear parallels between California’s Central Coast and the Yarra Valley he once called home: both defined by maritime influence, both capable of wines that combine energy with elegance. Together, Steel and Schroeder lead a team whose craftsmanship is evident in every glass.

The Allure of Exclusivity
Sea Smoke’s wines are not easy to find, and that’s part of their charm. They’re allocated through a system called The List, which offers members access to releases without fees or purchase minimums. It’s a simple, fair way to ensure that the wines reach those who truly appreciate them.
For collectors, the rarity only heightens the appeal. Sea Smoke isn’t merely a name; it’s a phenomenon. To drink Sea Smoke is to taste California’s Central Coast at its most elegant.
