In life, everybody follows their own journey, coupled with a fascinating story to tell. Recently, I connected with a dynamic couple called Neno and Diane Murad who reside in Melbourne, Australia. They migrated down under in the 1990s from Iraq to try and build a better life. It’s clear speaking to them that they are very grateful for the opportunity and want to pay it forward. This essentially was the catalyst for establishing NLiR33. The micro brand’s mission is to push the boundaries of lighting design. Ultimately they want to inspire architects, designers, and individuals to see light as a transformative force in their lives. The innovative ‘Clock Light’ perfectly illustrates this point.

When Neno and Diane Murad embarked on NLiR33 they wanted to go far beyond the parameters of a conventional lighting company. However, this involves time, patience and deep pockets. It’s all well having a vision but getting it to market is a whole different entity. What can look great on the drawing board might not translate well to a physical product. For example, cool ideas might be challenging to manufacture and that’s why many brands decide to make prototypes first. Fortunately, NLiR33 have overcome many of these hurdles and released a few innovative collections including the ‘Clock Light’.

For well over a decade I’ve been writing books and articles for magazines about horology. It really fascinates me how inventive brands are becoming when searching for new solutions. With traditional mechanical technology, there are restrictions and huge cost implications. That’s natural because of the meticulous craftsmanship that’s involved. Watch label HYT has experimented with fluid technology as a way of telling time. Since 2012 the company has gone through various incarnations but the results have been very effective. However, the price point is well beyond most people’s budgets. That’s why micro-electronics has filtered into the industry. Effectively you can purchase an innovation like the ‘Clock Light’ at a fraction of the price.

What makes the ‘Clock Light’ so appealing is reimagines time through light rather than numbers. It’s a very clever concept that has a very powerful visual ethereal style quality. NLiR33 has achieved this by developing a patented 240V, 8W fixture with a trusted manufacturer. With a diameter of 420mm, it is well-proportioned and comes in 3 finishes. The black and white are distinctive but I feel the brushed gold is the most effective. Interestingly this product also has a symbolic meaning and is inspired by the very first page (“the prince loves the morning sun”) of Neno and Diane Murad’s children’s book entitled Prince Run. The message they want to convey with this product is clarity, guidance, and hope.
