Marseille: Grit, Glamour, and a Comfortable Stay at NH Collection

Marseille doesn’t seduce in the way of Paris or Nice. You have to look past the clichés—gritty port city, rough-around-the-edges reputation—to discover its restless spirit. You land here expecting a bit of chaos, and you leave wondering why you didn’t visit sooner, or longer.

France’s second-largest city has always marched to its own rhythm. Founded by Greek sailors more than 2,600 years ago, Marseille still feels like a city caught between cultures. Mediterranean sun meets North African spice. Provençal markets unfold beside old-school pâtisseries. In the Vieux-Port, fishing boats bob beside sleek catamarans, framed by 18th-century facades and the ever-present Notre-Dame de la Garde watching from above.

To explore it all, you’ll want a base that’s central, reliable, and fuss-free. NH Collection Marseille fits the bill. Housed in a stately Haussmann-era building in the heart of the Joliette district, it offers a clean-lined, contemporary retreat with just enough warmth to feel personal. It offers a solid, comfortable stay in a city that demands your attention elsewhere.

Part of the Minor Hotel Group—also home of Anantara, Tivoli, and Avani hotels—NH Collection properties strike a smart balance between business-minded efficiency and quiet sophistication. The Marseille outpost is no different. Rooms are simple but functional, with crisp linens, sleek bathrooms, and welcome touches like Nespresso machines and rainfall showers.

The location, just north of the Old Port and close to the metro, makes it easy to explore on foot. Within minutes, you’re wandering past grand boulevards, through sun-washed squares, or along the city’s jagged coastline. In the mornings, the hotel’s breakfast buffet sets you up for the day with more than the usual fare—local cheeses, charcuterie, fresh fruit, warm pastries. It’s generous, even by French standards.

And when you return, footsore and sun-flushed, the small lobby bar provides a civilized pause. Framed by oversized picture windows that look out onto the lively Rue de la République, it’s a great spot to recalibrate over a glass of rosé or the Europeans’ favorite aperitif, an Aperol Spritz. There’s something satisfying about watching the street life roll by as the sun dips behind the city’s golden facades.

But it’s outside the hotel that Marseille works its magic. Start at the Vieux-Port, where centuries of history unfold around a bustling marina. From there, climb the hill to Notre-Dame de la Garde, or hop on Le Petite Tourist Train that takes the long, winding route up the hill, affording stunning beach panoramas. The view from your hilltop destination—city, sea, and stone—is the best in town. Then wander back down through Le Panier, the city’s oldest neighborhood. Once a haven for sailors and exiles, it’s now a maze of pastel facades, winding alleys, and independent galleries. Street art creeps across weathered walls; laundry flaps between windows; the scent of bouillabaisse and grilled sardines drifts on the breeze.

In the afternoon, head to the MuCEM—Marseille’s boldest architectural statement. Its lace-like concrete shell, jutting out into the sea, houses exhibitions on Mediterranean culture and identity. Cross the footbridge to Fort Saint-Jean for unbeatable views and a café terrace that catches the late sun.

If the weather holds, carve out time for the Calanques—jagged limestone cliffs plunging into turquoise coves just outside the city. You can hike from Cassis, kayak from Sormiou, or take a boat straight from the port. Either way, you’ll find wild Mediterranean beauty at its rawest.

At night, Marseille simmers. Casual seafood joints line the water, while tucked-away bistros and Moroccan cafés serve couscous royal and mint tea late into the evening. You’ll eat well here, and not just Provençal classics. The city’s multicultural soul finds its way onto every plate.

Returning to NH Collection Marseille after a day in the fray feels like exhaling—a reliable place to rest, reset, and map out the next adventure. The staff are attentive, the spaces clean and quiet, the overall vibe unfussy and calm. With its solid location and understated comfort, the hotel gives you the freedom to dive into the city—then retreat with a glass of something cold and a view of the streetlights blinking to life.
