When it comes to planning a weekend getaway to Maine, there are so many places to choose from ranging from luxurious resorts and Downeast escapes to seaside destinations and hidden gems.
One of the best ways to explore all the state has to offer starts off with a visit to Portland. With its cobblestone streets, boutique shops, working waterfront, and award-winning restaurants, it’s really no wonder the coastal city remains one of the Pine Tree State’s most popular destinations.
Whether you are planning a weekend getaway, a weeklong escape, or an extended stay, The Docent’s Collection offers one of the most unique ways to visit and explore the city in style. Located in the walkable heart of Old Port, the property features apartment-style, luxury lofts that truly feel like a home away from home.

The recently built-out residence-style accommodations are just steps away from art studios, boutique shops, coffeehouses including the popular Bard Coffee, and lively nightlife that Portland has become so well known for. Whether you are simply traveling with your four-legged friend, a significant other, or the entire family, The Docent’s Collection offers a range of accommodations to choose from.
What makes the property so unique is that there is no hotel lobby or check-in desk. Everything here is done electronically. On the day of arrival, you will receive a text alerting you to the address of the property. Simply download the app included in the text and you will receive your digital room key. Your phone will then act as your room key throughout your stay. A member of their hospitality team is always readily available and will text you throughout your stay to see if you need anything or would like to request any housekeeping services during your stay.

Each of the studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units offers a fully stocked modern kitchen with hidden appliances and waterfall island, a sun-soaked dining and living area with flat screen TV and oversized windows (dog bowls, welcome treats, and a pet bed were already set up in the loft for use during our stay), and a spacious bedroom.
Every amenity needed for a comfortable stay is included - even umbrellas are available for use.
The historic building boasts beautiful pieces of Maine-inspired artwork by local artists found throughout the common areas and lofts.
While there are no restaurants on property, the lofts are ideally situated within walking distance of some of the top eateries in town (think Duckfat, and Eventide Oyster & Co.).

For dinner, we recommend making a reservation at Twelve nestled in a historic 150-year-old brick building on the waterfront. A seasonal prix fixe menu along with a la carte offerings are both available to choose from and you can opt for seating in the main dining room or seasonal patio bar.
Being from Massachusetts, we would be remiss if we did not order Boston’s beloved Parker House rolls to start. Three warm rolls were made even better accompanied by a flavorful pesto butter.
Be sure to try their unique take on mussels prepared with squid ink pici, roasted garlic, and lacinato kale. The rolls are ideal for mopping up every last drop. Other appetizers include a green salad, grilled asparagus, tuna crudo, beef tartare, and a warm, buttery lobster roll.
For main events, their standout dish was a delicious sampling of fresh cod served atop a tasty lobster saffron bisque. Halibut, bratwurst, an oyster mushroom, and New York strip were also available for main courses the evening we visited.
For breakfast the following day, head over to Smalls, a fun little café located in the West End neighborhood. They offer a collection of freshly baked goods along with “grab and go” prepared treats (think jam and butter, or ham and cheese on a baguette) as well as heartier offerings like their popular breakfast sandwich made with a “silky” egg, topped with a flavorful garlic and herb feta sauce, tomato mayo, and fresh arugula.

The Docent’s Collection invites guests to stay half-priced at their newest location, the Boyd Block, from late summer through early fall.
The rates are available on select dates from August through October and must be reserved by July 31.
