The 2014 season has gotten off to a great start at the prestigious International Polo Club Palm Beach, with Audi’s team taking an early lead. The German automaker’s crew won the opening match in the club’s Joe Barry Memorial Cup game, thanks to an overtime goal by star player Nic Roldan.
The New York Times has called Roldan, who has modeled for Ralph Lauren, “the sport's most potent combination of athletic ability and good looks.” He comes from a long line of polo pros; his father played for the Sultan of Brunei and his grandfather played before him, and Roldan, a Palm Beach local, practically grew up with a polo mallet in his hand.
Luxury Swiss watchmaker Piaget, official timekeeper of the International Polo Club Palm Beach, is sponsoring its prestigious Piaget USPA Gold Cup for the seventh consecutive year. In addition to that and the Joe Barry Memorial Cup, the 2014 season lineup includes hotly contested high-goal competitions as the Ylvisaker Cup and will culminate with the playing of the coveted 110th Maserati U.S. Open Polo Championship in April sponsored by the Italian sports car marque. Aside from Piaget and Maserati, Veuve Clicquot, Belvedere Vodka and the Four Seasons Palm Beach are major sponsors of the season’s sport.
