National Gallery of Art

The National Gallery of Art was bequeathed to the people of the United States of America by Andrew W. Mellon upon his death in 1937. The gallery houses his own collection of paintings and sculpture works, which he began collecting twenty years prior to his death.

Today, the Mellon collection is still the centerpiece of the museum with many world-class exhibitions radiating from it. The National Gallery of Art is also home to an outdoor sculpture garden that can be enjoyed by the public year-round.
