“I love the possibilities of corsets. You could say I wanted to put women in a gilded cage,” Zuhair Murad noted backstage at the start of his Spring 2016 couture show. His latest collection was a nod to the romanticism of the past with a line of historically-inspired fairy tale designs. Models came down the runway in pastel, floor-length ball gowns with metal crowns upon their head like 18th century princesses.

Since taking over at Valentino, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli have given the label an almost iconic look—the vision of a romantic woman dressed in layers of lace, brocade and texture that has traveled from Italian opera houses to the plains of Africa. For the Spring 2016 couture collection, the designers drew inspiration from early 20th century designer Mariano Fortuny and played off of his ideas of Grecian myth, turning yesterday’s runway into a parade of sartorial goddesses.

John Galliano is at his very best when left to his own devices, unrestricted by the normalcy of ready-to-wear.
