As part of the Galleries, 60th anniversary celebration, the all-encompassing exhibit The World of Duncan Phyfe was developed to complement the Metropolitan Museum of Art's winter exhibit of Phyfe as Master Cabinetmaker. The Hirschl & Adler exhibit, The World of Duncan Phyfe, curated by gallery owners Stuart and Elizabeth Feld, is comprised of work made by Phyfe and his contemporaries in New York City, seen alongside work created by other artisans of the time in wood, silver, porcelain, and metal. This show, a rare opportunity to purchase works of museum-quality, will succeed in expanding one's understanding of Phyfe's contribution to the world of 19th century fine furniture and decorative arts.
On view from December 15, 2011 to February17, 2012, The World of Duncan Phyfe at the Hirschl and Adler Galleries will showcase work by Phyfe over his 47 year career and pieces by cabinet makers working in New York City at that time, including Charles-Honoré Lannuier, Michael Allison, Thomas Constantine and J. and J.W. Meeks.
Designed to paint a complete picture of the era, complementing the cabinetry created by Phyfe and his contemporaries will be silver, porcelain, metal work and lighting made in New York during the period of 1800 to 1847, as well as New York-centric paintings and works on paper and sculpture.
Of the over 100 works of art on view at the Galleries will be a stunning set of dining chairs made in 1810 by the Phyfe shop for the wealthy New York-based merchant and investor Isaac Bell, the Center Table (circa 1815-9) produced for the first Director of the New York Stock Exchange Nathaniel Prime by Charles-Honoré Lannuier, and a rare Chinese Export Porcelain serving dish made for Governor DeWitt Clinton and his wife.
Being able to purchase work of this stature and excellence is a rare opportunity, and a perfect one to explore and expand upon the recent practice of integrating fine antiques with contemporary design. This exhibit is an unparalleled opportunity to enhance one's personal and work space with grace, beauty and distinction.
The World of Duncan Phyfe - The Arts of New York, 1800-1847 is free and open to the public from Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, and by appointment on Mondays. |
