In a Sea of Billboards, Stefano Formica Explains How to Choose the Right Lawyer

Stefano Formica of Formica Law Group

Drive around the Los Angeles area or other cities, both large and small, and without a doubt, the streets will have lawyer billboards dotting them. They may seem flashy and eye-catching, and boast big dollars, but they tell nothing about whether or not that lawyer would be a great pick. There is more that goes into choosing the right attorney than simply seeing a billboard or recognizing a name that was splashed on one. Getting it right is crucial because it can make the difference in whether a case is won or not and how much is recovered.

"Too many people hire based on seeing a billboard or other eye-catching marketing tools, only to be disappointed later on," said Stefano Formica of Formica Law Group in Los Angeles. "It's so important to make the right decision when it comes to hiring the best lawyer for your case. If you get that right, the rest will take care of itself."

According to the American Bar Association, there are more than 1.3 million lawyers in the U.S. In the last decade, the field has grown by over 41,000 new lawyers. New York and California have the most lawyers, with the two states combining to make up 28% of all the lawyers in the country. This clearly shows that when someone needs to find a lawyer to take on their case, it can be a daunting task that involves considering numerous candidates.

Weeding through the vast marketplace of lawyers doesn't have to be difficult for those who know what to look for. Doing a little due diligence will go a long way toward ensuring that the right one is selected, which is the best way to improve one's chances of being successful with the case. The time spent researching and choosing the right person to work with will pay off in the long run.

Here are some things to consider when choosing the best lawyer to work on a case:

See beyond billboards. Lawyers spend tens of thousands to advertise their name and firm. Getting their image in front of the public helps them get new clients, but that doesn't mean it's a good fit. It just means that they have a good marketing person who created an eye-catching campaign. Never choose a lawyer based on billboards or gimmicks.

Consider expertise and experience. Not all lawyers handle the same types of cases. People must find one that specializes in and has extensive experience in the kind of case they have. Always look at their knowledge, expertise, and take their trial experience seriously.

Evaluate peer respect. Many lawyers turn to other lawyers for assistance and guidance when they have complex cases or know they need more backup to increase their chances of winning. Find out who the lawyers turn to, because that peer respect speaks volumes about who is a great lawyer.

Scrutinize the results. Look at the results from the lawyers to see what they have been able to accomplish. If they haven't recovered much for their other clients, they likely won't for you either. Their records speak for themselves, so investigate them.

“If you have a serious case, it calls for a serious lawyer who will get results,” said Formica. “That can’t be trusted to just anyone, or someone who spends a lot of money on marketing. You have to take a deep dive into the matter, even if it feels uncomfortable and tedious, so you can get the results you need and deserve.”

Formica is a well-experienced trial attorney who only takes cases that focus on wrongful death and catastrophic and serious injuries. Formica is considered a "lawyers lawyer," because so many lawyers turn to him for assistance on significant or complex cases. Stefano Formica is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), which is one of the nation’s most effective organizations in championing the ethics, professionalism, and principles of the legal profession. Formica is also a champion when it comes to giving back to the community, participating yearly in a variety of events that help individuals and families, including providing people with food or new opportunities.
