Model Beauty: Tips and Tricks from the Catwalk

Model make-up: tips and tricks

When you see a model strutting down the catwalk, what adjectives spring to mind? Beauty, poise, composure and confidence are all up there, of course, but if you looked behind the scenes of a fashion show, you would see virtual chaos, as models, make-up artists, dressers and producers run around hurriedly, ensuring every model is picture-perfect before he or she graces the catwalk.

There are lots of tips and tricks that models and MUAs have to ensure that they look their best as quickly as possible, and fortunately these are also tips you and I can use when we’re short on time, too.

For neat eyebrows...

Vaseline, or petroleum jelly, is your new best friend. Not only can you use it to sooth lips, soften skin, give your eyelids a glossy look, but a small amount combed through unruly brows can tidy them up quick-smart. Use an eyebrow comb to brush your brows upwards, then use a lightly greased finger to slick them into place. This is a great technique if you have an active day ahead, as your brows will maintain their shape against the elements, such as wind and rain.

For fresh skin...

Indulge in a facial massage. Simple techniques that you can practice at home, every morning, or pre-party, getting into the habit of gently massaging your skin on a daily basis can do wonders for its elasticity and complexion.  Use a light facial lotion or oil to allow your hands to glide across your skin and apply pressure to your forehead, temples and jaw line. Check out this slideshow for a visual guide to facial massage.

For clean hair on the go...

If your hair is looking less than fresh and you don’t have any dry shampoo to hand, dust a little translucent powder over your roots and brush. The effect will be the same as a dry shampoo and is a handy hair saver when you’re out and about.

For a stellar décolleté...

The skin on your chest is super-sensitive so it needs year round TLC and protection from the sun to ensure it stays in the best condition possible. But if you’re looking for a quick-fix before going out in your new strapless dress, head this advice. Mix a little bronzer or highlighter into your breast gel or lotion and apply. Your skin will feel soft and moisturised from the breast lotion, and the bronzer or highlighter will give your skin a glowing, luminous look.

For quick all-over glamour...

If you have time for nothing else before you leave the house, slick back your hair into a ponytail and apply a layer of lipstick. The colour on your lips (opt for a warm pink or red) will draw attention away from un-mascaraed eyes or foundation-free skin, while the ponytail will make your hair look instantly neater.
