When it comes to dining out for brunch in south Florida, the options seem endless for traditional breakfast and lunch finds. But if you are looking for something special, South Bar & Kitchen offers an unexpected find in downtown Pompano Beach.
The “contemporary southern American concept” offers a menu with a Louisiana-style twist. Think Cajun and Creole flavors coming together in dishes like cornmeal crusted fried green tomatoes, sweet potato pecan waffles, and warm South sticky buns.
You can opt to dine in the main dining room or request a table on the outdoor patio shaded by an enormous tree.
Alfresco dining here is made even better when paired up with a pitcher of mimosas. Other signature brunch cocktails include Bloody Marys, a South Spritz, an Old-Fashioned Breakfast, and a 95 South Espresso.
The menu full of comfort food selections is approachable and broken down into fun categories like Hankerin’, Sweet & Savory, and Both Hands.
Start off with a sampling of not-so-traditional, and almost too pretty to eat, deviled eggs made even better with flavorful Cajun whipped yolks, topped with smoked trout roe, chicken cracklin’ and green onions.
If you need just an extra bite before moving onto your main dish, order a Chicken Little, a sweet and savory slider of crispy (and super juicy) fried chicken served on a warm buttermilk biscuit topped with honey butter.
The popular Old Town restaurant continues to stand out by serving dishes filled with scratch-made flavors, spices, and marinades. Some other unexpected finds on the brunch menu include poached eggs with cheesy middlin grits, steak and eggs with crispy Cajun hash browns, and their popular hoe cakes, a corn pancake stack topped with warm macerated blueberries.
South Bar & Kitchen’s take on traditional chicken and waffles instead features smoked and split hot chicken sausage links accompanied by a warm buttermilk Belgian waffle served with a side of hot honey.
For main events, be sure to try their signature Cajun jumbo lump blue crabcake Benedict topped with poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce served on a toasted English muffin. The fried half chicken provides the perfect combination of crunchy and juicy served with a buttermilk biscuit.
To enhance your dining experience, try one of their accompaniments like cheesy grits made with smoked gouda, cheddar and bacon; maple glazed thick-cut smoked bacon; or a simple staple like toasted pullman brioche served with seasonal jam and soft butter. You’ll be glad you did.
South Bar & Kitchen is located at 165 NE First Avenue in Pompano Beach, Florida.
