Bernie Wolfe, Former Pro Goalie, Focuses on Financial Saves

At one time, Bernie Wolfe’s job was to make saves for the Washington Capitals. As the team goalie for nearly five seasons, his job was to play the important team role of keeping the puck out of the net. Today, he assists people in making financial saves, ranging from retirement financial planning to wealth management services. His current team role is to help his clients preserve and grow their assets.

“As a goalie, I tried to keep the puck out. Today, as a financial planner, I try to help people meet their financial goals,” explains Bernie Wolfe, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTMProfessional and founder of Bernard R. Wolfe & Associates, Inc., a company that specializes in offering wealth management strategies. “While the two fields may seem completely different, there are a number of guiding principles they share.”

A few of the lessons that Bernie follows today, which he also employed as a goalie, include:

· How to make smart saves. As a goalie, and as a financial planner, one has to have a sense of awareness and be able to determine the most appropriate route to take, whether it’s in protecting the net or protecting one’s financial future.

· Controlling the pace matters. The goalie has some influence on the pace of the game, just as a financial planner does. Planning one’s financial future calls for patience, discipline, and an ability to set the pace, just like in net-minding.

· Determination is half the battle. Those who are determined, whether in the net or in the financial planning seat, have the potential to achieve a much better outcome. This is especially true if they are effective at working with their team, which will increase their chances of a successful outcome.

“Just as with goal tending, in financial planning you have to be aware of what’s going on around you, plan for what lies ahead, and be able to adapt as the game changes,” added Wolfe. “The more prepared you are, and the better the team you have, the better your outcome will likely be, as well.”

Bernie playeduniversity hockey, as well as professional hockey, and retired in 1978 at the age of 27. After retirement he went into the financial planning field where, shortly thereafter, he founded his own company, Bernard R. Wolfe & Associates, Inc., which has now been providing financial services for over 30 years.
