Apple-Watch More Water Resistant Than Official Rating

Apple Watch, how waterproof?

Apple

The Apple Watch is set to release in stores in about a month, and reviews have been good. Consumer Reports released a report analyzing 11 smartwatches from Apple, MVMT watches, Samsung, and Martian to test for things such as durability. The Apple Watch came in first.

Furthermore, the Apple Watch may be more water resistant than Apple claims it to be. Apple states that “Apple Watch is splash and water resistant but not waterproof” and does not recommend submerging Apple Watch. At the same time, the Apple Watch rates as a 7 on the IPX meter, which measures the ability of objects to resist water on a scale from 1 to 9.

Tech blogger Ray Walker decided to find out for himself how water-resistant the Apple Watch is. Not by just showering with the Watch or taking a dip in the backyard pool. Walker, an avid athlete, ran 10 miles to the local pool to get some laps in and test out the Apple Watch.

Walker started off by swimming for 25 minutes and about 1200 meters. He was particularly interested in testing the watch’s ability to work when his wrist impacted the water over and over again. However, the watch worked fine. Walker was able to turn it on and off and access apps.

It was not a total success. While the watch has an app which can measure a person’s heartbeat, it failed to work properly in the water. But most watches do not have this ability, as Walker said that “the technology is just not there yet.”

Walker then tested the watch’s ability after jumping off a 5 meter and a 10 meter platform three times. That was a complete success.

Finally, Walker tested the watch in a custom-designed waterproofing chamber that simulated the watch’s ability to work after being submerged in 40 meters of water for eight minutes. The unit ran perfectly even then.

You may still not want to take your watch on that next deep-sea diving expedition as the Apple Watch is not warrantied for anything Walker did. But if you are caught in a thunderstorm wearing it, there is no doubt that you will be just fine.
