In less than 5 years the image of “Made in China” clothes has totally evolved.

More and more Chinese designers are emerging on the international market and celebrities from around the world have started wearing their designs.

Let’s take the example of Rihanna’s dress at the MET Gala in New York last month. It was a yellow fur Guo Pei’s cape gown. The singer made a splash on the red carpet and photos of her at the event became viral. After it we’ve learnt that Guo Pei spent 2 years to make this amazing piece.

Why is Chinese fashion is becoming more and more popular? 

Chinese people are more and more looking for quality products and products made by Chinese. They are less and less attracted by major brands logos and are proudest to wear Chinese designers clothes.

But most of the time Chinese designers cloths are very expensive as the production cost is high. In fact, local plants aren’t adapted to small production as they are equipped for exports and mass production. This is the reason why most of Chinese designers designs are expensive and represent a real investment. 

But who are the trendiest Chinese Fashion designers right now?

Nowadays, a new generation of designer belonging to Chinese middle class has emerged and is becoming more and more popular among Chinese consumers. Their creations are influenced by their history and culture but it’s at the same time very modern and sophisticated.

Masha Ma is one of these designers very successful in China. She showcased her collection at the Paris Fashion Week and wants to show to the world that Chinese women are contemporary and modern.

Guo Pei an other Chinese fashion designer is considered as the new face of the Chinese haute couture. She started 30 years ago to make dresses. Her collections are entirely sewn by hand in her atelier with some pieces that require more than 50,000 hours of work before completion. All her pieces are actually art pieces and very often some of them are exposed in museums all around the world.

Uma Wang has already showcased her collection in London, Paris and Milan fashion week and is now one of the most promising Chinese fashion designers. She is renowned for her uses of different textures, materials and unique prints. 

Helen Lee’s designs are influenced by arts, music, nature and her creations are sophisticated. She’s among Chinese fashionistas favorite designer right now.

Nicole Zhang is designing clean lines and functional cloths with a sporty vibe. Her designs can be considered as unisex and are very appreciated by the young Chinese generation. 

What about popularity of Chinese designer in the West?

Westerns people still have a lot of prejudices about Chinese fashion products. When they think about “Made in China”, they are thinking at bad quality and poor design.

It’s still a big problem that needs to be overcome if Chinese fashion designers want to sell abroad.
