The fashion world was forever impacted on Tuesday when iconic journalist Anna Piaggi died in Milan, at the age of 81. The soft-spoken Piaggi made her statements through her designs. She had an eccentric and bold style recognized by all the greats in the industry. Piaggi’s accessories channeled looks from all countries, cultures and centuries incorporated colorful patterns and were an inspiration and adored by many. Her experiences and travels made her way into her designs and also in her own wardrobe. She never feared putting something unique out there and also sporting it herself.
Famous, iconic designers and luxury fashion lovers across the globe unite in their sadness after learning about the loss of Piaggi.
“The world of fashion has lost one of its most original and subtly critical figures,” said Giorgio Armani. “Anna Piaggi knew how to take a very Italian way of living and thinking fashion and make it international, turning it into the highest expression of art and culture. I will miss her unmistakable presence, free of all conventions, in the front row, and her way of seeing things, which was always passionate and able to catch the spirit of the times.”
Another response to the news comes from yet another idolized designer: “I am truly saddened by the passing of Anna Piaggi,” said Donatella Versace. “She was a visionary with a heart of gold. The world is a little less colorful without her.”
Piaggi’s love for fashion and style came at an early age and she described her passion to WWD in 1978. “To me, fashion is a trance,” said Piaggi. “It is a moment, an expression. My philosophy of fashion is humor, jokes and games. And I make my own rules. I never pick up something and just throw it on my back like that. There’s a little bit of study, and it’s always better if I think about what I’m going to wear the night before the next day. And what is to be avoided at all costs is the twinset look, the total look.”
The fashion world has lost one of its greats; that’s undeniable. But hopefully her bold fearlessness can be interpreted in our style, new fashions and taking risks in all areas of life.
