If you’re the kind of person who can’t go anywhere without your make-up bag, you’ll have faced the problem of what do to when it’s holiday time. You can only take so much from your prized collection, and there’s a lot to take into account; how the humid conditions will affect your look, and what make-up will stand up to the intense bouts of heat, giving you the peace of mind to enjoy your holiday without worrying about your look.

A holiday can also be a blessing for make-up aficionados. After all, you’re being given an opportunity to try out some new styles and vibrant colours in a new setting. If you’re going to be experimental, you’ll need to be prepared with some of the most suitable holiday centric make-up on the market, so take some time to evaluate the cosmetics in your kit.

Applying a layer of primer to your skin before you start your make-up routine is recommended, as it’ll help keep everything in place. You’ll then want to take the time to moisturise your skin, and when you’re going to be under the sun all day, a high quality SPF moisturiser is well suited for both protecting your skin and keeping it hydrated. It can also be very soothing if you’re experiencing sunburn, so use it both before and after a long session in the sun.

Skin can also become overly oily in prolonged heat, so if you’re after something that’ll cover up the shine, a powdered foundation can offer both an additional layer of SPF protection from the sun, as well as a desirable look that isn’t overly shiny. Liquid foundation can also be suitable if it’s UV protective, but is generally thought to be less effective than its powdered counterpart at staying in place in the heat.

For your eyes, waterproof make-up such as protective eye-shadow, mascara, and eyeliner will be able to stay in place around this high risk area. Our eyes tend to become very watery as a method of protection during exposure to the sun, so wearing regular mascara is not advised as it’s almost guaranteed to melt and run in the heat. Regular lipstick also tends to become very sticky in sunny weather, so instead try out a light balm instead to provide UV protection and prevent lips from drying.

In terms of overall colour palette, you’ll want to aim for something bright and breezy; lighter pastel colours are well suited for summer settings. Whilst we all love deep and rich colour palettes, these are far more suited to colder climates and will only make you feel hotter under the beating sun.

Overall, you should just make sure to find a look and routine that will make you feel comfortable in your skin, and don’t forget to cleanse and clean away excess oil before and after every session in the sun.
