Rancho Pescadero is a Surfers Luxe Resort in Baja California Sur

Surfs Up at the Luxury Rancho Pescadero

Baja California Sur is known for some great surf spots: Todos Santos, Cerritos Beach, Las Palmas and San Pedrito. Driving along Highway 19, you can't miss the large Rancho Pescadero sign pointing down a long dirt road. Once you reach the Pacific Ocean, you've reached the chic boutique surfing resort.

Checking in at the reception desk, guests are led to the outdoor pool bar for complimentary hibiscus and tamarind margaritas.

The resort was built in 2009 by a couple from Northern California. They constructed 12 romantic suites that all open up to ocean-view terraces. Mosquito netting around the beds enhance the amorous atmosphere. Bathrooms have deep tubs and showers with two spraying heads. The sinks are big, the towels are fluffy, and candles can be lit in the evening for a dreamy glow. In the closet are robes to wear after a swim or in the morning, while sitting outside on the palapa-covered patio with a cup of coffee.

Children under 18 years old are not allowed and they don't encourage a rowdy crowd. The resort starts closing the restaurant and bar by 9:30 p.m.

Touted as an Outrageous Oceanfront Oasis, it attracts an affluent surfer crowd. Word got out, so the owners added 16 more suites to accommodate the demand.

Guest staying in unit #14 enjoy the huge gourmet kitchen, expansive living area with a dining room, elegant bedroom and designer bath.

Activities include long walks at sunset along the near-empty beach, as pelicans glided above the swells.

For dinner couples walk along a concrete pathway to the resort's Garden Restaurant. The culinary duo, Jeff and Susan Mall from Northern California have been consultants with Rancho Pescadero for years and are now onsite chefs in the kitchen.

All the dishes pair nicely with the Mexican beers and wines offered on the menu. The fresh fish is caught daily and served with a Mexican flair.

Guests walking back to the property look up and gaze at the brilliant stars in the sky. It's easy to spot the Big and Little Dippers and Orion's Belt overhead.

Beyond the pool, couples snuggle near the roaring fire pit, enjoying one last cocktail at the bar before going to bed.

Windows in each suite are open to let in the fresh beach air as guests are lulled to sleep, while the waves pulsate on the shore.

In the morning, staff members deliver colorful baskets with a pot of coffee, milk, and sprinkled cakes for a light breakfast before surfing.

Some guests take their own boards or borrow one from the property to surf at the popular neaby sites, others walk along the beach before breakfast. Near the reception area in the open-air patio, groups gathered at tables to eat healthy dishes such as, roasted garden vegetables with poached eggs on top of curry bread and a delightful traditional dish of chilaquilas with scrambled eggs.

By 9:45 a.m. many guests walk over to the yoga pavilion for the complimentary 10 a.m. class.

Ranchero Pescadero is the relaxing tonic surfing enthusiasts need while enjoying the beauty of Baja California.
