Singer/Songwriter Jessie Chris Opens Up About Bullying

Jessie Chris

Imagine being just 17 years old having recorded an acoustic version of 98 Degrees’ "I Do" with Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees and performed for 500 military families at Gillette Stadium the night before the Patriots playoff game. With three songs currently on iTunes and a nomination for Female Artist of the Year at the New England Music Awards, that’s just what Jessie Chris has already accomplished in her short life. (Did we already mention she's only 17?!)

We caught up recently with the Massachusetts native to discuss what inspires her songwriting, coming offa recent multi-state anti bullying tour and her plans for the future. The young country musician got her start playing the guitar when she was just nine years old and by middle school, she found one of her true passions in songwriting. “My favorite band is Rascal Flatts and I also love Tim McGraw and Faith Hill,” she said. “When I get started writing a new song, I start with the lyrics because that’s my strength. I write like it’s a poem and then go on to create the melody.”

One of her first songs “Chameleon” was written as a result of bullying based on Chris’ own personal experiences. “I was going through a rough time in middle school and it was my way of finding closure with an experience with bullying,” she said. “I am really passionate about the songs I have written and hope they might be able to help someone else out of a tough time. I love being able to share my songs and help kids who are going through something similar. I want to be a role model for people.”

What was it like performing with Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees? “It was so cool!” Chris exclaimed. “He’s such a down-to-earth, great guy and was so easy to hang out with.”

This summer, Jessie can be seen performing at the CMA Festival in Nashville in June and the Armed Services Country Music Festival July 11 in Colorado Springs at Falcon Stadium.
