SWIMS Founder Discusses Inspiration, Creation and Production

SWIMS

Style, functionality and protection were just a few features Johan Ringdal knew he had to keep in mind when he created SWIMS, his line of modern galoshes. From boots and loafers to sneakers and even bags, he has created a brightly colored water resistant line of products that you can show off at the beach or walking around town. We caught up with Ringdal recently to find out what inspired him to create the line, how he comes up with new ideas and what are some of their hottest items this season.

What was your inspiration when creating SWIMS?

The inspiration for SWIMS came from my grandfather's galoshes that I wore throughout university in Paris and New York at Parsons. I thought it was a shame to let such a great product die out, and decided to reinvent it and make it fashionable.

How do you come up with new product ideas?

SWIMS is all about classic shapes that are redesigned with innovative materials. SWIMS has become a lifestyle brand and from our SS15 and FW15 collections that will be clear. We are proud to make new product categories that accompany our two classics--the loafer and the galosh--whilst sticking to our vision.

What are some of the most popular items in men's and women's?

Our most popular items for men are our galoshes, loafers and business rain-coats. Women favor our rainboots and all-weather parkas.

What type of person is the line created for? Stylish? Weather conscious?

SWIMS is designed for chic conservatives. These people are both conservative and creative, cautious and courageous, sporty and sophisticated. And being highly adept, they cherish business and pleasure alike. And of course, they are definitely not afraid of a little rain!

Tell me about Armani by SWIMS and how that collaboration came to be?

That collaboration came to be due to Armani's fascination for innovation. It was an extremely interesting and educational process. It was wonderful to work with such an established, iconic brand, and we are lucky to have our Senior Industrial Designer Catherine Meuter who came to SWIMS after working for Armani during the collaboration.
