When you have the right kitchen equipment and utensils on hand, you’ll find that cooking is a breeze. Whether you work in a commercial kitchen or just potter around at home, ensuring that your cupboards are stocked is a must. We have outlined some of the more essential pieces of equipment and utensils in the list below to help you ensure that all your bases are covered.

Pots & Pans
Don’t feel like you need to be a whole set of matching cookware – instead, pick and choose which pots and pans will best meet your needs.

▪       Large pot (with lid). This is highly useful for boiling pasta, steaming vegetables, and making soups or sauces.

▪       Medium saucepan (with lid). This will do exactly what the larger one does, just on a smaller scale.

▪       Large skillet. This is highly useful for sautéing meats and vegetables. A deep one with rounded sides can also be used for stir frys.

▪       Medium skillet. This size is ideal for making omelets, cooking eggs and even for making tasty grilled sandwiches.

Sharps
A good knife will make cutting easier, quicker and neater, as well as lessen the chance of injury. Most professional grade knives are more than suitable.

▪       Knives. Those we consider to be most essential include chef’s knives, paring knives and serrated knives.

▪       Cutting boards. It’s a good idea to invest in two types – plastic (for raw meat) and wooden (for bread, fruit and vegetables).

▪       Box grater. This tends to be the most versatile kind of grater, as it usually comes with 6 different grating sizes.

▪       Vegetable peeler. We recommend splurging and getting a nice one with an easy-to-grip handle.

Mixing & Lifting
Remember that a drawer isn’t the only place to store your kitchen equipment – why not find a fun container so that they can be stored on the bench?

▪       Wooden spoon. These items are both versatile and inexpensive, so it’s a good idea to pick up a few.

▪       Spatulas. These come in a variety of materials, from metal to silicon – we recommend having both types on hand.

▪       Whisk. This is often used for preparing salad dressings and sauces, as well as for combining dry ingredients.

▪       Tongs. These will help to protect your hands from burning or freezing when trying to prepare food.

Other
There are plenty of other kitchen equipment that doesn’t really fit into the above categories but can be highly beneficial in making your life easier.

▪       Mixing bowls. These often come in sets of three, each of different sizes, which allows them to “nest” in storage.

▪       Measuring cups and spoons. It’s definitely a good idea to have both types of measuring apparatus.

▪       Colander. This is used for straining and draining foods. A wire mesh one can also double as a sifter in baking.

▪       Oven mitts, pot holders, tea towels and aprons. All of these items are designed to protect your person whilst cooking.

If you are in the market for some brand new Kitchen Appliances and utensils, we hope that you find the above list useful when shopping. Depending on the kind of kitchen you operate and the delicacies that you create, you might find that some of these items aren’t applicable and that others not listed are – remember that this is only supposed to act as a guide!
