What is the Point of a Bendable Cell Phone Screen?

Samsung Flexible Screen Display

CNET.com

Although the progression of technology is always an extremely interesting topic, sometimes companies just seem to be putting a bit too much research into creating technologies that might sounds cool on paper, but end up briefly gimmicky and interesting only as long as it remains novel.

The bendable screens that Samsung has been trying to perfect seem to fit into this category; on first glance it seems like a really cool aspect of a smartphone but, after serious consideration, the ability to bend one’s phone just seems like a selling point that ends up having no real functionality. Even if the technology behind the screens was ported over to other consumer electronics like televisions or tablets, it would still be a rather weak reason to purchase a product.

The only real advantage I can see to the continuing development of bendable screens is that those who wear tight jeans will have an easier time slipping the phone into their pockets, that’s about it.
