From now until April 16, 2016, the Museum at FIT will be presenting Fairy Tale Fashion, an exhibit that tells the story of beloved classics through high fashion. The installation will feature over 80 pieces that portray characters from 15 different literary fables, from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen to Charles Perrault’s Little Red Riding Hood. Within large, fantasy-like sets, pieces from designers such as Thom Browne, Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford, Mary Katrantzou, Marchesa, Alexander McQueen, Prada and Walter Van Beirendonck will be displayed.

Guests will experience almost a century worth of fantasy-inspired fashion, from a 1930's evening gown by Mary Liotta that makes reference to Furrypelts by the Brothers Grimm, to a Swarovski-encrusted Little Mermaid-inspired ball gown from Rodate Spring 2015. Many designers chose to create literal translations of their characters, like Christian Louboutin’s ruby red heels that represent Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz or Comme des Garçons’ iconic red-hooded cape. Others chose a moral, a character trait or an abstract representation to tell their visual narrative.

Many of the pieces used in the exhibition were pulled from FIT’s extensive private collection, others were recently acquired or loaned to the school exclusively for the showcase. A number of fantasy illustrations from 20th century artists Edmund Dulac, Arthur Rackham, and A.H. Watson are also on display, as well as a number of large photographs from Kirsty Mitchell’s award-winning Wonderland series.
