Viktor & Rolf Couture Collection is a Celebrity Commentary Filled With Bath Towels and Potato-Sack Dresses

Cool! Red carpet looks actually made out of red carpet! Or is it a towel? Either way we never look this good stepping out of the shower—probably because we don’t know how to tie that cool bow… For Viktor and Rolf’s Fall 2014 couture collection, red, fluffy and questionable was the name of the game, with every single design decked out in head-to-to scarlet. Aside from looking like puffy strawberries, these dresses—if you can call them that—were a hard transition from their last couture show that featured skintight ballerina detailing. With Viktor & Rolf there is an abstract creativity that needs to be allotted for when surveying a collection—and this runway was rife with it.

Puffs of red carpet (yes, each piece was made from actual carpet) sourced from a factory in Holland was worked, manipulated and tied into an ensemble, some of which reportedly took over 300 hours of work to make. Some of the looks are accessorized with bows, others with shaved leopard prints and some have both. “We like the idea of animal prints because it’s so primal glamour,” designer Viktor Snoeren told WWD. But the sensuality of the red and animal print is negated by the giant Moschino-esque red bows—not to mention that it’s made entirely of carpet.

As a thinly veiled commentary on the world’s obsession with celebrities and fame, the collection was almost too blatant and could have used some restraint when it came to its metaphors. And while we might not be fans of the freshly-showered look with the fluffy towels, bare faces and unkempt hair, undoubtedly some up-and-coming blogger will see these rose-colored potato sacks as a way to get noticed by a street-style photographer and rocket herself to the fashion blogger A-list.
