Burberry: The Art of the Trench

Posted: Nov. 19th, 2009  |  By Christina Stewart

News & Trends: A quality trench coat is unarguably one of those fashion staples that if done right, can turn an otherwise ordinary outfit into something truly remarkable. From the time it was founded back in 1856, the London-based fashion house of Burberry has been providing some of the most highly sought-after and sophisticated trenches around the globe.

Having earned a worldwide following for its timeless aesthetic and classic outerwear, Burberry has taken things to the next level by recently launching the Art of the Trench, a collaboration between Burberry and some of the world’s leading photographers. Featuring a series of portraits by fashion and street-style photographers such as Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist, the Art of the Trench serves as a living document of the trench coat and the people who wear it.

The series of images are filtered among several different categories, including popularity, gender, styling, trench color, weather, and collaborations. Once an image is selected, visitors can view its details, leave a stamp of approval, write a comment or share the image with friends via social networking sites. Because Burberry strives to show a diverse selection of people and styles, visitors are encouraged to submit portraits of themselves and their friends while wearing their own Burberry trench coat outdoors. Burberry’s favorite submissions will be posted onto the site where they will join the first 20 user-submitted portraits that have already been guaranteed placement. Visitors from across the globe have jumped at the opportunity to showcase their own personal style with submissions pouring in from the streets of Amsterdam to Singapore.

The site also features the “Story of the Trench,” which provides a unique timeline of relevant facts and events from as early as the 1910s all the way to the 21st century. The different decades include an assortment of images, newspaper clippings and stock videos, each pertaining to the history of the trench coat.

With the chill of winter upon us, there’s never been a better time — or a better way for that matter — to browse Burberry’s extensive collection of classic trench coats.
