Grand Wailea Home to Largest Art Collection in Hawaii

Grand Wailea has a reputation for being one of the premier luxury resorts in Hawaii. With powder-fine sand beaches, 780 rooms, and nine pools, guests feel they are in a vacation fairy tale. What visitors may not know is the Grand Wailea Resort is home to the largest art collection in the state of Hawaii.

Fernando Botero's sculptures are hard to miss. With voluptuous ladies and rotund gentlemen, his work is iconic and can be seen in museums across the globe; private collections include the White House and the Grand Wailea. Displaying nine sculptures in all, the pieces are actually artist's drafts - the first creation before any replicas are done.

Estimated at $30 million in value, the Columbian figurative artist's work is pronounced, but at home in the open-air courtyards and strolling gardens on property at Grand Wailea. The Botero Bar is a perfect location to sit and take in the Botero Bronzes.

Dale Zarrella is also a prominent artist on the grounds and showcased within the collection of Grand Wailea. Creating the likeness of the God Maui with his fishing net which drew the islands from the sea, his work is central to the courtyards of the resort. A talented wood carver as well, Zarrella created the Wailea Mermaid out of a single piece of wood.

The piece depicts a mermaid feeding several sea turtles; the grain of the wood creates the weightless effect of water billowing through her hair and down her perfectly scaled tail. If lucky, the artist does work on pieces on-property from time to time. The rare experience of seeing a master at work is a prized occasion.

Art plays an important role on the grounds of the Grand Wailea. With art galleries including the works of Dale Chihuly and Michael Gilbert (the art director of on-property NaPua Gallery), the esteemed collection of over 72 sculptures and murals was estimated at around $40 million when last appraised. Included in the extensive collection are 18 Fernand Leger bronze sculptures - the largest collection outside of France.

Art lovers and vacation seekers alike will find an abundance of fine art, historically significant creations, and a luxurious property at Grand Wailea. To make reservations for an unexpected treasure chest of a fine art collection, visit GrandWailea.com.
