Inspired by certain types of flowers that can close at night and reopen in the morning, Studio Drift created the Shylight. As you can see in the above video, the unique lighting design (made using layers of thin silk attached to steel frames) expands and unfurls as it drops down from the ceiling, creating soft lighting effects. Controlled by a smartphone or tablet, the Mother Nature-inspired sculpture can also retreat and its layers fold back in on itself much like a flower. “It is a lamp that looks alive because of unpredictable, natural-looking movements: it descends to blossom in all its glorious beauty, to subsequently close and retreat upwards again,” says the company. For installation purposes, Shylight can drop nearly 30 feet and when grouped together, can give endless possibilities for a choreographed dance of sorts. Especially if music is brought in.
