Four Decades of Master Blending: Lorena Vasquez of Zacapa Rum

Lorena Vasquez, master blender, Zacapa Rum

Zacapa Rum has earned global acclaim for its rich heritage and deep-rooted tradition. Its three expressions—Zacapa No. 23, Zacapa Edición Negra, and Zacapa XO—are made by Lorena Vasquez, one of the few female master blenders in the world of spirits. A true trailblazer who has shattered glass ceilings in the traditionally male-dominated world of spirits, she has served as the esteemed Master Blender for Zacapa Rum for nearly 40 years. Not only has she achieved remarkable success, she has also become an inspiration for women within the spirits industry and beyond.

With a deep appreciation for the rich heritage of Zacapa, Vasquez skillfully combines time-honored traditions with innovative techniques. She brings an expressive character and special approach to blending, harnessing the best ingredients from Guatemala to create the first brand to be inducted into the International Rum Festival’s Hall of Fame. Named one of PEOPLE en Español’s 25 Most Influential Women in 2015, her dedication to the art of premium rum-making has earned her a stellar reputation as a true leader in the spirits industry.

Zacapa XO is a unique balance of complex aromas and flavors resulting from the exclusive blend of reserve rums.

Her three Zacapa Rum expressions are meant for a two-finger pour, straight-up or on the rocks. More than a spirit, each is crafted in Guatemala; each is a work of art—an expression of patience, richness, quality, and master blending. Produced with only the first pressing of sugar cane juice, this ultra-premium barrel aged spirit is well known for its superior quality and taste, thanks to an exceptional blend of flavors and its extraordinary smoothness.

If the mention of rum elicits images of tiny umbrellas floating in coconut-shaped mugs, it’s time to rethink the popular spirit. Try:

Zacapa No. 23, $49.99: Zacapa No. 23’s balance of delicate and unique flavors is derived from a blend of age drums between 6 and 23 years old, originating from the “Sistema Solera” aging process. Zacapa No. 23 is aged in selected barrels that previously aged robust American whiskey, delicate sherries, and fine Pedro Ximénez wines, creating a smooth & balanced rum. Zacapa No. 23 Rum is best served neat, on the rocks, or in your favorite dark spirit cocktail.

Zacapa Edición Negra, $70: Zacapa Edición Negra is made of a blend of rums between 6 and 24 years old and is inspired by the natural elements of Guatemala including the dark fire of its volcanoes. Edición Negra is aged in select barrels including double charred American oak casks, creating a rich, dark rum with a smoky intensity. Zacapa Edición Negra is best served neat or on the rocks and provides a smoky twist to your dark spirits classic cocktails.

Zacapa XO, $119.99: Zacapa XO is a unique balance of complex aromas and flavors resulting from the exclusive blend of reserve rums. Vasquez hand selects rums aged between 10 and 25 years in the “Sistema Solera.” Older and younger rums are then blended as they age in a sequence of barrels that previously stored robust American whiskeys, delicate Sherries, and fine Pedro Ximénez wines, and are then finished in French oak casks which previously aged Cognac. Zacapa XO is best enjoyed neat or on the rocks and pairs beautifully with dark chocolate and desserts.

Vasquez brings an expressive character and special approach to her blending.

As smooth, silky, and satisfying as a classic bourbon, and featuring bold flavors and sweet notes of toffee, caramel, and vanilla, Zacapa rums make for the ultimate gift for those in your life who deserve the best.
