The BB-8 Star Wars Toy is Definitely the Droid You're Looking For

When the trailer for Episode VII: The Force Awakens was finally unveiled, everyone immediately took notice of—and fell in love with—the soccer ball-shaped BB-8 robot. It seems like the little droid has arrived to give R2-D2 a roll for his money (yeah, that’s right, roll), especially now that there’s already a miniature toy version out there.

Though a lot of Star Wars gadgets and toys (including a Millennium Falcon drone) have been made officially available today (which is known as Force Friday), this little fella is without a doubt the winner. Designed by robotics company Sphero, the BB-8 is—let’s face it—adorable. Controlled by an app, the droid’s head balances on the top of a rotating ball so it can zoom all over the place without tipping over.

Able to follow voice commands, the little robot has a wide range of sounds and expressions that mimic that of what you’ll see in the movie upon its December release. You can design a route on the app and then send him out on patrols, take control of him in drive mode, and record virtual hologram video messages to send to others. The best part is that since the app can be updated, the toy’s personality can grow and evolve over time, making it way better than static memorabilia that just sits on a shelf.

At just $149, BB-8 is pretty darn cheap, but you can count on it being a serious collector’s item down the road. It’s apparently already sold out in Tokyo, so you should probably snatch one (or 10) up now before the holiday season hits.
